Helpful IT items (Students) - 3/30/20

Adobe Creative Cloud

Good morning Warhawks,

As a result of ULM’s adjusted operations plan for the campus, student access to Adobe Creative Cloud in computer labs and classrooms is not available. Adobe has provided temporary at-home access for impacted students and faculty, so that they can continue their work remotely. Please follow the instructions below to enable access to Creative Cloud Desktop Apps on your personal device.

Visit https://creativecloud.adobe.com and use your school credentials to sign in.

If prompted, select Company or School Account and then enter your password. Or provide your credentials in your school’s login screen. You may see a screen stating “Additional account details required”. Check your Warhawks email and you will receive an email to set your password. Once that is completed you should gain access to the software.

From the Creative Cloud website, browse for and download your desired app. Click Apps on the top of the page to view all apps.

For more information on how to download or install apps, see Download and Install Creative Cloud apps.

For Higher Education students to continue developing skills, Adobe offers free “Daily Creative Challenges”. These are guided projects where participants receive creative prompts and connect with pros, mentors, and other students for feedback and support. Click on the app name to learn more: PhotoshopXD and Illustrator. Also, for inspiration and over-the-shoulder learning, watch pros share their creative process on Adobe Live daily at www.behance.net/adobelive.

Helpful IT items (Employees) - 3/23/20

As a reminder, below are items that you may find useful now that you are working at home mostly.

Office365 is available to all Employees & Students.  Via Offcie365, you are able to install the Office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) on up to 5 devices.  So if you need that updated version of Office at your home computer, feel free to download via these steps:  https://www.ulm.edu/it/office365_help/office-install.html

Did you know that ZOOM also can be used for online texting/chat???  This feature is available once you have a ULM ZOOM account and many office groups are using it for inter-office communications. If you don’t have a ZOOM account, check out this info for connectivity:  https://www.ulm.edu/it/video-conferencing.html

For those using the OpenVPN service, the VPN connection will time-out after 12 hours of no activity.  For best practices though, please disconnect your VPN session after you have finished your work activity.  This will ensure availability for other users and ensure proper security to the ULM Campus network.

Our CallCenter/Helpdesk is available – 318-342-3333 or https://webservices.ulm.edu/computersos/

Other IT related information can be found on our website at:  https://www.ulm.edu/it/

Information regarding Internet Connectivity for Online Instruction - 3/17/20

Dear Students,

In an effort to assist our Students with technology needs during this unprecedented time, the ULM Office of Information Technology is investigating resources that may be of interest.  In the event that you do not have adequate Broadband Internet while away from campus, ULM has been made aware that expanded Broadband Internet services are available in dealing with COVID-19 changes to our Society.  Here is information provided by the FCC and Louisiana Department of Education regarding connectivity options.

Most US broadband and telecom businesses have pledged to support the "Keep Americans Connected Pledge" which asks companies to not terminate service for residential customers, waive late fees incurred due to the economic effects of the virus, and open access to public Wi-Fi hotspots to any American who needs them.

Students with limited incomes may apply for $5 to $10 per month internet access through the following options:

1) AT&T Access (https://m.att.com/shopmobile/internet/access/)

2) Cox Connect2Compete (https://www.cox.com/residential/internet/connect2compete.html)

3) CenturyLink Lifeline (https://www.centurylink.com/aboutus/community/community-development/lifeline.html)

4) Charter Communication (https://www.spectrum.com/) will offer free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a subscription.

PLEASE NOTE:  This is not an all-encompassing list for all areas of Louisiana. Please contact the data and internet providers in your local area to inquire about options.  Also, ULM is strictly passing this information along as advisement – ULM is not responsible for the options these companies are offering.

IT Services Statement

Information Technology is prepared to continue full support of ULM’s technology needs to Students, Faculty, & Staff during this time of concern regarding COVID-19.  There are a few items we would like to bring to your attention as reminders and new features to assist your technology needs.

• As usual for regular IT support needs, please contact our IT Helpdesk at 318-342-3333 or https://webservices.ulm.edu/computersos/.

• For Moodle support needs during normal campus hours, you may contact our office directly at 318-342-5050.

• We have a more versatile VPN platform expanded to allow remote work as needed for respective University Departmental employees.  New information and How-To instructions for VPN access can be found at:  https://www.ulm.edu/it/campus-systems.html#vpn  Note about VPN:  this is required for those needing to access resources from off-campus such as Banner INB or making the remote desktop connection to an office computer that is left powered on.

• OpenVPN & RDP require these 3 main steps:

a. Configuration of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) service on your office desktop

b. Installation of the OpenVPN agent on the remote computer, laptop, tablet device

c. Connection of the RDP client from the remote device

• IT has obtained several mobile WIFI devices that can be temporarily reassigned to individuals who may be without adequate Internet services.  For Faculty/Staff work at home needs, we are making these Verizon 4G Mobile Hotspots (MIFI) devices available upon request while our supplies last.  Please use responsibly for work purposes as these devices have a 25GB of monthly data capacity and are throttled to 3G speeds afterwards.  These devices do not require or use your personal cellular data plans.  Please have your Director assess that situation and submit an email request through your respective Dean or VP.  These mobile WIFI (hotspot) devices are provided by Verizon, so they will function sufficiently as long as they have adequate Verizon cellular/data reception.

• Please convey to Students that they should contact our IT Helpdesk services for any technology issues they may have  – we are here to help as much as feasible.

• Also remember that the Library Information Commons, Clark Williams Student Success Center, as well as other existing computer labs are open at this time for Students needing a place to study and work on computers.

• ZOOM is another tool available to assist with group meeting sessions.  ZOOM can be used on/off campus for concall and/or presenting content.  Contact our IT Helpdesk if you are interested in getting ZOOM access - https://www.ulm.edu/it/video-conferencing.html.

• All Support and Services needs will be tracked on our Helpdesk website.  This will provide you with an email record of that activity.

• For Faculty instructional needs, webcams are available upon request.  (Most new laptops/desktops have a built in webcam.)  Check with the Library Circulation Desk for availability.

• If you relocate ULM property to other locations, it is your responsibility to complete the appropriate Property Control equipment forms:
https://webservices.ulm.edu/forms/officesdepartments/property-control.
