Who believes and why?

Sumerian amulet

This presentation is about magical thinking and superstitious beliefs.  There are 3 main sections, magic in literature, magic in history, and beliefs today.  The first section addresses our exposure to belief in magic through children’s literature as well as classical literature, such as Shakespeare.  The second section has selections from historical writings in which the concept of witches and magic are intertwined with religion and belief in God.  The third section looks at a few of the superstitious beliefs that are maintained today.

As you explore this presentation, think about what ties historical beliefs about the supernatural to present beliefs. What do we have in common with those believers from the past? How do we think differently about the supernatural?
