Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the basic areas that form the foundation of all science and is essential for a complete understanding of the physical world. Focusing on the study of matter, the field of chemistry includes a wide variety of basic areas ranging from the study of atoms, the chemical bond, and basic chemical reactions to the exploration of applied topics, including biochemistry, medicinal and drug chemistry, forensic science, physical and quantum chemistry, and instrumentation.

Chemistry students benefit from a close working relationship with faculty members in an atmosphere that encourages research. Majors can gain preparation suitable for graduate study in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical and materials engineering, environmental sciences, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, clinical chemistry, or molecular biology. Other professional opportunities open to chemistry graduates include: medical, dental, or veterinary schools; business administration; patent or environmental law.

What sets us apart?

Student-faculty research

All lecture courses are taught by full-time faculty, not by graduate students and seldom by part-time instructors. The teaching faculty maintain close contact with students.

Academic Concentrations

The Chemistry Program offers a chemistry degree with optional specialty concentrations in Biochemistry, Forensic Chemistry, and Medicinal Chemistry.

Personalized Advising

Students interested in a pre-professional curriculum will be assigned a highly knowledgeable pre-professional advisor to ensure that they take courses that will best suit their future plans.
