ü
Make sure you are not the
tallest object in the immediate area.
ü
At home:
o
Follow weather reports. Make
sure a battery-powered radio is nearby.
o
Lightning can cause power
surges. Unplug all appliances before the storm hits.
o
Avoid using the phone.
Telephone lines can conduct electricity.
o
Metal pipes also conduct
electricity. Stay away from faucets, sinks, and bathtubs.
o
Close the blinds and shades
of your window, then keep away from them.
o
Keep pets on a leash or in a
carrier.
ü
Outside:
o
Crouch down to make yourself
as small as possible.
o
If you feel your skin tingle
or your hair stand on end, squat low to the ground on the balls of your feet.
Place your hands on your knees with your head between them. This minimizes your
contact with the ground.
o
Don’t
lie flat on the ground, as your fully extended body will provide a larger
surface to conduct electricity.
o
Don't
bunch up with other people. Stay at least 15 feet away from the next person.
ü
In/on
water:
o
Get to shore and away from
the water as quickly as possible.
ü
Vehicle:
o
Roll up all windows
o
Stay in the car
If someone is struck
by lightning, it is a possibility that his or her heart has stopped beating. To
care for anyone struck, begin first aid immediately and call 911 or send for
