Tornado Safety Tips

A Tornado Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms and tornados to develop. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio and your local media for weather updates.
 
A Tornado Warning is issued when tornado has been detected by radar or seen by trained spotters. TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY!

 

Stay away from windows, door, and outside walls! Protect your head!

 

ü      Homes or small buildings

o       Got to the basement or an interior room in the lowest level of the building (i.e. closets, bathrooms, hallways)

o       Stay away from all windows

o       Protect yourself from flying debris

§          Cover yourself with pillows, a mattress, blankets, etc.

ü      Mobile Home

o       Go to a sturdy building

o       If no sturdy building is near by, crouch in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert

o       Cover your head with your hands

ü      Schools, nursing homes, shopping centers, hospitals, factories

o       Go to a predesignated shelter area

§         Interior halls and small rooms on the lowest level are best

ü      Vehicle

o       Go to a sturdy building

o       If no sturdy building is near by, crouch in the nearest ditch, ravine or culvert

o       Cover your head with your hands

o       DO NOT try to out run a tornado
