"[Russian] Officers began to speak openly of the Imperial Family in conversation even with foreigners in a way that would have been impossible a few weeks earlier. A [Russian] General of Artillery, in discussing the disgraceful theft of magnetos from motor-cars and even the leather from the seats of the British 4.5s in transit from Arkhangel shruggled his shoulders and said: 'What can we do? We have Germans everywhere. The Emperess [Alexandra] is a German!'" (515).
