Several Events Planned for Faculty Honors Week

Faculty Honors Week at the University of Louisiana at Monroe is an annual event that recognizes faculty excellence in teaching, research and service. The 2003 Faculty Honors Week is scheduled for March 31 through April 3.

The Outstanding Faculty finalists for 2003 in the College of Arts and Sciences/Arts are: Dr. Helen Lock, associate professor of English; Dr. Ruth E. Smith, professor and head of the department of foreign languages; and Dr. Gordon E. Harvey, assistant professor of history. Finalists for the College of Arts and Sciences/Sciences are: Dr. Jose L. Cordova, associate professor of computer science; Dr. Frank Lorenzo Pezold, professor of biology; Dr. Rene A. De Hon, professor of geology; and Paul M. Karlowitz, assistant professor and head of the department of aviation. Nominees in the College of Business Administration: Dr. J. A. DeFatta, professor of accounting; and Dr. James T. Hood, professor and head of the department of accounting. Finalists for the College of Education and Human Deveolpment: Dr. Jean M. Low, associate professor of psychology; Dr. Mark Doherty, associate professor of health and human performance; and Dr. Joseph R. McGahan, professor of psychology. Nominees for the College of Health Sciences: Dr. Paul W. Sylvester, associate professor of pharmacology; Emily S. Doughty, assistant professor of nursing; and Dr. Judy Fellows, associate professor of communicative disorders.

Five professors will be chosen as the Outstanding Faculty Members for 2003. The winners will be announced at the beginning of Faculty Honors Week. Those five professors will be honored throughout the week.

Other events scheduled for the week are:

Monday, March 31, 4­6 p.m.: Promotion and Tenure reception at the Anna Gray Noe Alumni Center.
Tuesday, April 1, 2­4 p.m.: Outstanding Faculty Panel Discussion held at the University Conference Center on the 7th floor of the ULM Library.
Wednesday, April 2, 7:30 a.m.­4:30 p.m.: Student Research Symposium, The University Conference Center on the 7th floor of the ULM Library.
Thursday, April 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m.: Faculty Honors Award Program with hors d'oerves following, The University Conference Center on the 7th floor of the ULM Library.

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Alumni Association sponsor the Faculty Honors Awards Program.

This year's application process and number of awards have been modified to reflect the recent changes in the University's academic and administrative structure. During the spring semester, five full-time faculty members will be honored: one each from the Colleges of Business Administration, Education and Human Development, and Health Sciences; and two from the College of Arts and Sciences (one from the Arts and one from the Sciences). Each honoree will be designated an Outstanding Professor and receive a picture to be displayed in the ULM Library for one year. Additionally, each award will carry a $500 stipend and a $500 contribution to the individual's Departmental Foundation Account.

To be eligible for a nomination, a faculty member must be full-time, have a minimum of five years of academic experience and a minimum of three years at ULM.
