ULM Foundation honors Coach Lou St. Amant, others at annual Evening of Thanks

The University of Louisiana Monroe Foundation recognized donors and lifetime benefactors at the annual Evening of Thanks event on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, in the Terrace Room on the 7th floor of the ULM Library. Former ULM baseball coach Lou St. Amant received the prestigious Hall of Distinction Award. Anne Lockhart and Ash Aulds were recipients of the 2024 Warhawk Ambassador Award.

ULM Emily Williamson Lab school to host "A Glimpse Into the Future" fundraiser on Mar. 23

The University of Louisiana Monroe Emily Williamson Laboratory School (EWLS) invites the public to "A Glimpse of the Future," a celebration and silent auction showcasing the school's achievements and its rebuilding and expansion project. The event will take place on Saturday, March 23, in The Hangar on the second floor of the ULM Student Union Building at 601 Bayou Dr. from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $50 per person, and reserved tables of eight are available for $500. Tickets can be purchased at www.ulm.edu/ewls.

U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow secures $1 million in community project funding for collaboration between ULM and City of Monroe

Louisiana District 5 Congresswoman Julia Letlow announced that she has secured $37.39 million in community project funding for the Fifth District of Louisiana. As part of the funding package, $1 million will go toward a collaboration between the University of Louisiana Monroe and the City of Monroe for entrepreneurial expansion and a business incubator.

ULM School of VAPA presents Shrek the Musical, Mar. 21-24

Shrek The Musical is coming to the University of Louisiana Monroe, March 21-24, thanks to talented actors in the School of Visual and Performing Arts. Shrek The Musical can be seen at Brown Auditorium March 21-23 at 7:00 pm and March 24 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $20 for General Admission, $15 for Faculty/Staff, and are free for students with an ID and are available at the door. The Hawkeye staff earn honors at Southeast Journalism Conference

The staff of ULM's student-run newspaper, The Hawkeye, joined student journalists from twenty-five universities at the Southeast Journalism Conference 2024 on February 23-25, 2024, at Troy University in Troy, Ala. Editors and contributors participated in professional sessions and on-site competitions over the two-day event. Highlights included keynote speakers Emmy award-winning CNN journalist Tom Foreman and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Ashley Remkus.

Dr. Wendy Bailes named Dean of ULM College of Health Sciences

The University of Louisiana has named Wendy Bailes, Ph.D., RN, the new Dean of the College of Health Sciences, pending University of Louisiana System board approval.

Bailes served as Interim Dean since May 2023. She was previously the Director of the Kitty DeGree School of Nursing at ULM.

The University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts invites the public to attend two upcoming performances. The first is a Concert Choir Performance on March 12 at Parkview Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. On March 14, ULM Professor of Flute Sandra Lunte will be joined by the Monroe Symphony Orchestra for their series "MSO Presents" at Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall at 7:00 p.m.

The University of Louisiana Monroe hosted the annual Louisiana Educators Rising State Conference on Thursday, February 29, 2024. ULM creates ACES program to educate students with intellectual disabilities

The University of Louisiana Monroe is proud to announce the creation of the Academics, Career, Engagement, and Support (ACES) Transition and Postsecondary Program, a comprehensive transition and postsecondary education experience for young adults with intellectual disabilities. ACES provides its students with an inclusive college experience, including courses designed to prepare participants for the workforce.

ULM Kinesiology faculty members publish co-written article in international journal

ULM kinesiology professor Dr. William Hey recently co-authored an international article in the Journal of Pedagogical Research along with instructor Jessica Reynolds.

The research title is "Studying U.S. college faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic: Perceptions of severity, concerns, sources of information, preventive behaviors, barriers to work performance, and impact on work productivity." The study examines U.S. college faculty perceptions of and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ULM Station Archaeologist Dr. Diana Greenlee named to The Explorers Club 50 Class of 2024

ULM Station Archaeologist, Dr. Diana Greenlee, has been named to the Explorers Club 50 Class of 2024 for her achievements at the Poverty Point World Heritage Site.

The Explorers Club 50 chose to honor Dr. Greenlee because of her dedication to preserving the 3,400-year-old earthworks site and encouraging public knowledge surrounding Poverty Point's historical significance. Dr. Greenlee was nominated by Dr. Richard Wiese, the President Emeritus and Explorers Club 50 Chair.

ULM hosts Louisiana's inaugural KidWind Challenge

On Friday, February 2, 2024, ULM hosted the KidWind Challenge, a renewable, wind energy learning experience sponsored by Pattern Energy Group and held at Bayou Pointe Event Center. Over 75 students from Cedar Creek, Neville, and Sterlington middle schools attended to participate in activities that impart knowledge and hands-on exposure to the science behind renewable energy, specifically wind power.

ULM biology dept. partners with Delta Waterfowl for University Hunt Program

Three ULM wildlife biology students recently had their first duck hunting experience thanks to a partnership with Delta Waterfowl. The University Hunting Program provides students with first-hand experience of hunting culture and wildlife management. The ULM biology program was approached by Delta Waterfowl and offered the opportunity to establish the program at ULM. Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Ana Couvillion and Delta Waterfowl Hunter Recruitment Coordinator Aidan Flores were instrumental in bringing the program to ULM.

ULM School of VAPA presents Crimes of the Heart, Feb. 22-25

The University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts is proud to present Crimes of the Heart, a 1981 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, in production on February 22-25. Crimes of Heart will be presented at the Helen Spyker Theater, 3803 Desiard St. on the ULM campus. The play will begin at 7:30 p.m. on February 22, 23, and 24, and there will be a 2:00 p.m. performance on Sunday, February 25. Admission is free for ULM students. Tickets are $5 for ULM faculty and staff and general admission is $10. Tickets will be available at the door prior to each performance or in advance on Eventbrite.

Atmospheric Science students present at national conference, meet with Congresswoman Letlow

Six students from the University of Louisiana Monroe Atmospheric Science program, along with Associate Director of the School of Sciences Dr. Todd Murphy, attended the 104th American Meteorological Society's (AMS) Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD from January 27 - February 1, 2024. The AMS Annual Meeting is the largest meeting with a direct focus on weather, water, and climate, with thousands of people in attendance, taking part in more than 40 scientific conferences and symposia. The theme of this year's meeting was "Living in a Changing Environment".

High school seniors are invited to the University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts' first spring Audition Day on Friday, February 16, 2024. This is the school's first spring audition day for high school seniors interested in receiving scholarship money to participate in musical ensembles, both as music majors and non-music majors.

The Entrepreneurship Pelican Cup is now accepting applications for the 2024 competition. This event is the premier academic business plan competition for the state of Louisiana, with one of the largest cash prizes in the nation. Applications can be submitted at www.ulm.edu/pelicancup. The ULM Reginald F. Lewis Scholars will be outfitted with professional business suits thanks to a donation from JC Penney at Pecanland Mall as part of their bi-annual Suit-Up event on Sunday, February 4 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The event is open to ULM students, faculty, and staff, who can receive up to 50% off select career wear with their ULM ID.

ULM offering free help filing the FAFSA on February 5

The University of Louisiana Monroe is hosting a "FAFSA Frenzy" Open House on Monday, February 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. FAFSA Frenzy is a free event to help high school and transfer students fill out their FAFSA applications. Students are encouraged to come to the lobby of ULM's Sandel Hall, 4020 Northeast Dr. in Monroe any time between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on February 5. Staff from ULM's Recruitment and Financial Aid departments will be on hand to help students navigate the form.

AT&T contributes $25K to ULM's Centennial Scholars Program

In an effort to enhance digital literacy in Northeast Louisiana, AT&T has contributed $25,000 to the University of Louisiana Monroe's Centennial Scholars program. The Centennial Scholars are local fifth graders who will make up ULM's freshman class of 2031, the university's 100th anniversary.

ULM's Sutherlin publishes third book of environmental trilogy

ULM Chief Innovation and Research Officer John Sutherlin, Ph.D. has published the third book in what he calls his "environmental trilogy." Hog Wash: The Strange Case of SSA Global chronicles the efforts of a group of international environmentalists, investors, and researchers as they attempt to find an ecologically friendly process to clean up the toxic waste pouring into lakes, rivers, and streams from confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs.)

ULM cancels classes for Jan. 18, campus to reopen at 10AM

The University of Louisiana Monroe campus will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 18, but all classes for the day have been cancelled.

ULM Dining Services, including Schulze Cafeteria and the HUB, will be open for regular hours on Thursday, January 18.

Students are advised to check their course syllabi on Moodle.

ULM employees are encouraged to exercise caution when traveling. Employees unable to safely commute to campus should contact their supervisor for further instructions.

ULM closing campus Jan. 16-17 due to winter weather

The University of Louisiana Monroe campus will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to the latest inclement winter weather forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS).

Schulze Dining Hall will be open with limited hours from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 - Wednesday, Jan. 17. The ULM Activity Center will be closed Monday, Jan. 15, but will open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 for members only, no guests. The ULM Library, the HUB (including Starbucks), PODs, and the ULM Bookstore will be closed Monday through Wednesday and will resume regular hours on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The ULM Food Pantry located inside the Activity Center will be open on Sunday, Jan. 14 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

MONROE, LA – The University of Louisiana Monroe’s annual MLK Day of Service, presented by the ULM Office of Global and Multicultural Affairs, has been rescheduled for Saturday, January 20 due to inclement winter weather predicted for Monday, January 15. Members of the community are invited to join ULM faculty, staff, and students, with two opportunities to serve, including assisting the Northeast Louisiana Food Bank and a clean-up project at the Esther Gallow Community Garden.

Myles Goldman, ULM sophomore, Reginald F. Lewis Scholar and TRIO Scholar presented "A Marketing Analysis for Chennault Aviation and Military Museum" at the Undergraduate Research Conference at the University of Louisiana Lafayette (ULL) on November 4, 2023. ULL organizes the Undergraduate Research Conference annually in November. Undergraduates from universities and colleges around Louisiana met to share their knowledge and research through oral presentations, lightning talks, and poster presentations.

University of Louisiana Monroe President Dr. Ronald Berry awarded degrees to 674 graduates at the summer and fall 2023 commencement ceremonies on December 9, 2023. Two ceremonies were held for the four colleges, Arts, Education, and Sciences, Business and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, plus the Graduate School.

ULM announces fall 2023 President's and Dean's Lists

The University of Louisiana Monroe announces the students on the President's and Dean's Lists for the Fall 2022 semester.

Eligibility to the President's or Dean's list requires full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 semester hours completed) and the lists are calculated based on G.P.A. hours and term G.P.A.:

President's List: an undergraduate student is required to earn at least a 3.9 grade point average.

Dean's List: an undergraduate student is required to earn at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Graduate or Doctoral Candidates are not eligible for the President's or Dean's list.

ULM Advanced Graphic Design students participate in website competition

Eight ULM students in an advanced graphic design course recently competed in a website competition for Roux and Brew Seafood & Steakhouse, located in Ponchatoula, LA. The students were charged with recreating the website for the steakhouse, with the winner receiving $250 cash and the restaurant using the winner's winning design.

The University of Louisiana Monroe's TRIO Programs hosted activities in honor of National First-Generation College Celebration Day on November 16, 2023. The day brings attention to the experiences and achievements of first-generation college students, recognizing their determination and resilience in pursuing higher education, often in the face of various challenges. La. Cancer Foundation donates $10K to ULM's Sylvester for cancer research

The Louisiana Cancer Foundation continued their support of ULM's Paul Sylvester, Ph.D. with a $10,000 donation to support Sylvester's cancer research. The donation made on December 6 marks the 18th year that the LCF has donated to Sylvester's work, bringing the total amount donated to $180,000 over that time.

The University of Louisiana Monroe Honors Program attended the annual meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council in Chicago, IL from November 8-11. Envision 2023: Achieving the Impossible Dream

On November 2, 2023, the University of Louisiana Monroe hosted Envision 2023 at the ULM Clarke M. Williams Innovation Campus. Hosted by ULM President Dr. Ron Berry and First Lady Dr. Christine Berry, the annual celebration of the past, present, and future of ULM was enjoyed by alumni, community members, and university advocates. This year's theme was "Achieving the Impossible Dream." Attendees were treated to cocktails, dinner, and a program featuring musical performances from ULM students, staff, alumni, and special guest speaker and performer Nita Whitaker.

ULM Political Science students make donation to campus food pantry

The ULM Honors Political Science class recently made a donation of $328 to the ULM Food Pantry, which provides non-perishable food items to students experiencing food insecurity on campus. The money was raised through a donation-based bake sale hosted by the class.

ULM history professor gives guest lecture at the University at Buffalo

ULM Professor of History Christopher Blackburn, Ph.D. was recently invited by the University at Buffalo to present the annual C.K. Huang Lecture in Medical History. The lecture took place in the Robert L. Brown History of Medicine Collection in the University at Buffalo's Abbot Library on November 9, 2023. The C.K. Huang Lecture is named in honor of the former director of the UB Health Sciences Library and is offered annually on relevant aspects of medical history.

ULM to host Summer and Fall 2023 commencement ceremonies Dec. 9 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum

The University of Louisiana Monroe will hold two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, December 9, 2023. Both ceremonies will be held in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

The university will hold two separate ceremonies to honor the graduates of the four colleges:

9:30 a.m. - College of Arts, Education, and Sciences and College of Business and Social Sciences

ULM TRIO programs take educational trip to New Orleans

ULM TRIO Programs Student Support Services (SSS) and Educational Talent Search (ETS) took students on a field trip on November 9, 2023, to tour the campus of the University of New Orleans and the Nims Center Studio Film Institute in Elmwood, La. TRIO participants received information about UNO’s undergraduate and graduate school opportunities. The students enjoyed lunch at The Galley, UNO’s dining hall, and a walking tour of the UNO campus before traveling to the Nims Center Studio.

ULM School of Visual and Performing Arts hosts annual holiday art sale

The ULM Holiday Art Sale has been a wonderful addition to the Fall Semester for over 20 years. Every year the Honorary Art Society, Kappa Pi, hosts and facilitates a maker-themed art sale. This year's sale will run from Wednesday, November 29 through Tuesday, December 5 in Bry Hall on the ULM campus. The sale is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

ULM presents Kaleidoscope: A Global Holiday Celebration on Nov. 28

The University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts is excited to announce "Kaleidoscope: A Global Holiday Celebration." The program is an immersive experience incorporating vocal and instrumental music, dance, and visual art.

Kaleidoscope will take place in Brown Theatre, 4001 Desiard St. in Monroe on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program begins at 7:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $20 per person. ULM students are admitted free. Tickets for the Patron Pre-Party at 6:00 p.m. in Bry Art Gallery are available for $75 and include admission to the program. Tickets are available at ulm.edu/kaleidoscope.

ULM graduate students selected to present at state showcase

Recent Master of Music Education graduate Daisy Case, and current Master of Music Education candidate Katie Conrad, have both been selected to present their research at the 2023 Louisiana Music Educators Association Annual Conference on November 17-20, 2023.

Graduate Students from across the state were nominated to present at the 2023 LMEA Graduate Student Research Showcase, and both Case's and Conrad's topics were selected for presentation.

ULM HERO Program trains over 600 first responders in first year

The University of Louisiana Monroe College of Pharmacy is proud to announce that the HERO program successfully trained over 600 first responders in its first year. The ULM HERO program is funded by a $2 million, four-year grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which was received in summer 2022. HERO stands for Harm Reduction Education and Referral Opioid Overdose Reversal. The ULM HERO project focuses on providing harm reduction education to first responders in the state of Louisiana.

ULM College of Pharmacy provides lifesaving training to community at LEARN event

The University of Louisiana Monroe College of Pharmacy partnered with the Northeast Louisiana Children's Museum on October 19, 2023, to train the community with an event that is part of the LEARN program. LEARN stands for Louisiana Educational Awareness for Rescue Needs. The training allowed teens and adults to learn more about Basic Life Support (BLS), as well as EpiPen and Naloxone training, and tourniquet application.

ULM family mourns the loss of longtime supporter and alumnus Charles Freeman Stamper

The University of Louisiana Monroe family is mourning the loss of longtime supporter and alumnus Charles "Freeman" Stamper. Stamper passed away on October 22, 2023. He received his Bachelor's from ULM (then Northeast Louisiana State College) in 1968. After graduating from his beloved university, Freeman enlisted in the US Army where he obtained the rank of E5 Specialist and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

The annual brunch honors recipients of the prestigious Golden Arrow Award, Rising Young Alumni Award, and Best on the Bayou Award. This year also featured a rare awarding of the George T. Walker Lifetime Achievement Award, which had not been presented since 2015.

ULM Assistant Professor of Trumpet celebrates positive reviews of two new albums

University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts assistant professor of trumpet, Dr. Eric Siereveld, released his album for trumpet and brass called Vingettes: Music for Trumpet and Brass.

Siereveld's album received outstanding reviews from the International Trumpet Guild Journal, which is an internationally recognized publication known for reviewing and supporting instrumentalists.

ULM CBSS receives $1.5 million Department of Labor grant to continue High School Business Academy

The College of Business and Social Sciences at the University of Louisiana Monroe held a press conference on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, to announce the receipt of a second consecutive Department of Labor WORC Delta Regional Authority grant to fund the High School Business Academy. The grant award totals $1,499,983 and will continue to fund the program for the next three years. The High School Business Academy covers 11 parishes and prepares high school students for in-demand jobs in their communities in Northeast Louisiana.

Summer research empowers career development for Health Studies students

In the summer of 2023, two ULM Health Studies students, Sohalia Schoen and Mikala Weems, attended two summer research programs offered through the Louisiana State University Health campus in Shreveport and New Orleans.



Schoen secured a spot in the immersive eight-week summer research program in cardiovascular disease known as the CURIOUS program. Weems participated in the Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) summer program-- Building Health Teams.

ULM students "Roll Away Hunger" as part of hunger-free campus initiative

Students at The University of Louisiana Monroe gathered earlier this week to give donations and bring awareness to the issue of hunger on campus. As part of the Louisiana Board of Regents' Hunger-Free Campus initiative, ULM held a non-perishable food donation drive Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Student Activity Center. Students who donated food received a ticket to the "Roll Away Hunger" event at Skate Town on Wednesday, Sept. 20.

ULM TRIO prepares first-gen students with WINGS Camp

The University of Louisiana Monroe's TRIO Programs Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) successfully concluded its 8th Annual WINGS College Transition Camp from August 16th to 18th, 2023. The ULM WINGS Camp, a 3-day college transition program, took place just before the commencement of the fall semester and was exclusively designed for newly admitted TRIO-SSS program participants at ULM. The primary objective of the camp was to equip first-generation college students with the necessary tools for a seamless transition into university life. This involved acquainting them with campus resources, offering personalized guidance and support, fostering peer-mentoring relationships, cultivating a supportive community, and insights into the college experience.

ULM highlights enrollment increases, including largest ever Honors Program enrollment

The University of Louisiana Monroe is celebrating a number of enrollment increases in key areas at the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year. The university saw a 4% increase in First Time Freshmen, a 4% increase in transfer students, and a 10% increase in Dual Enrollment students. Overall enrollment is up 62 total students compared to fall 2022.

The ULM Honors Program is celebrating an overall enrollment increase of 38%. A total of 132 freshmen joined the program this year, making it the largest ever freshman class for the program.

ULM MLS program partners with LifeShare for blood drive, Sep. 18-19

The University of Louisiana Monroe Medical Laboratory Science Society and LifeShare Blood Center join together for a two-day blood drive on Monday, September 18 and Tuesday, September 19 to help save lives.

The blood drive will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both days in the Hangar Ballroom A on the second floor of the ULM SUB.

ULM VAPA presents Treasure Island, Sep. 21-24

The University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts presents the play Treasure Island, based on the Robert Louis Stevenson English classic adventure. The play will be presented at the Helen Spyker Theater, 3803 Desiard St. on ULM's campus. The play opens on Thursday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m., with additional performances on Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23, each at 7:30 p.m. A final matinee performance will take place on Sunday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free for ULM students. Tickets are $5 for ULM faculty and staff and general admission is $10. Tickets will be available at the door prior to each performance or in advance on Eventbrite.

ULM holds Warhawk Wardrobe Donation Drive Kickoff

On Wednesday, September 13, ULM held a Donation Drive Kickoff event for the Warhawk Wardrobe, a free resource that allows students to obtain business attire for job interviews or professional events. The event was to kick off a donation drive that will run throughout the fall semester. The Warhawk Wardrobe is accepting donations of new or gently used clothing ranging from business casual to business professional. ULM President Dr. Ron Berry and First Lady Dr. Christine Berry started the drive by making a donation themselves.

Warhawk Bundle continues to save money for ULM students

After one year of implementation, the Warhawk Bundle program continues to save money for ULM students. In the fall semester of 2022, ULM, in conjunction with Barnes & Noble Education, launched the Warhawk Bundle, a concierge service that allows students to have access to all their course materials before the first day of class at an average savings of 35-50%. Data provided by Barnes & Noble College (BNC) shows that ULM students saved an estimated $1,195,337 in the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters using Warhawk Bundle.

ULM hero Dr. Charles R. McDonald passes away at 84

The ULM family endured a loss Saturday with the passing of former employee and renowned Louisiana legislator Dr. Charles R. McDonald.

In January, ULM recognized McDonald in a standing room only crowd with the naming of the "Dr. Charles R. McDonald Office of Financial Aid." McDonald is regarded as the "Father of TOPS," which on average provides more than 58,000 students annually with financial aid, with the state legislature allocating approximately $300 million each year to support the program.

Members of the University of Louisiana Monroe's Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity recently returned from their 155th Summer leadership event, the Thomas C. Tillar Leadership Academy where the group won their fourth consecutive Robert A. Smythe Award. The Smythe is presented to the top 10 percent of Pi Kappa Alpha chapters each year. This win marks the 28th Smythe win in the last 32 years for the ULM Pike chapter.

Third cohort of Reginald F. Lewis Scholars pinned at Black Male Summit

The third cohort of Reginald F. Lewis Scholars were pinned during the annual Universities of Louisiana Black Male Summit, held in New Orleans on June 21-22, 2023. Two students from each of the nine University of Louisiana System schools were presented as members of the third cohort.

The School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Louisiana Monroe is thrilled to announce the arrival of Professor Winnie Tomeny to its art faculty beginning in August of 2023.

The ULM Museum of Natural History partnered with VCOM to host the 2023 Bayou Discovery STEAM Camp from June 19 - 23. This year's theme was "Marvels of the Human Body." The camp took place inside the ULM Museum of Natural History on the first floor of Hanna Hall and was open to elementary students entering the 4th or 5th grade. Camp sessions were presented by teams of faculty and staff from ULM and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), which is located on the ULM campus.

ULM Foundation receives $50K donation to create the Amy Katherine Lewis Student Award Endowment in Medical Laboratory Science

A $50,000 donation made to the ULM Foundation has established the Amy Katherine Lewis Student Award Endowment in Medical Laboratory Science. The donation was made in memory of Amy Katherine Lewis by her parents Jay and Teri Lewis.

Amy Katherine Lewis was a 2016 graduate of ULM, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science. Glenwood Regional Medical Center hired Amy upon graduation, where she worked in the laboratory until her passing in July 2020.

Lumen Technologies (NYSE:LUMN) and the University of Louisiana Monroe announced the donation of Lumen's local campus to the university. ULM historian contributes to special edition of publication

Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, Associate Director of ULM's School of Humanities and History Program Coordinator, was recently featured in the May 2023 edition of Nova Religio, The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions, published by the University of California Press. Anderson's article, entitled "Mississippi River Valley Voodoo: A Living Tradition?" examines the history of the religion and how it has evolved over the years.

Kitty DeGree School of Nursing hosts second annual boot camp for high school students

The Kitty DeGree School of Nursing at the University of Louisiana Monroe recently hosted its second annual nursing boot camp for high school students from June 6-9, 2023. The camp hosted 51 campers from all over the state.

Throughout the four-day camp, campers were introduced to a wide range of nursing skills including taking vital signs, caring for different types of patients, starting an IV, and even a simulated surgical environment.

ULM receives $200K in matching funds from LA Board of Regents

ULM and community collaborate in the study of history

While many people have heard of and even visited Layton Castle, one of Monroe's most important historical sites, relatively few know that it houses its own archive of documents, some of which are more than two centuries old. Moreover, they are not simply of local interest, but are connected to national trends and events.

ULM Honors Program students present research at annual meeting

The University of Louisiana Monroe Honors Program joined the annual meeting of the Southern Regional Honors Council on March 30-April 1, in Charlotte, NC.

ULM announces spring 2023 President's and Dean's Lists

The University of Louisiana Monroe announces the students on the President's and Dean's Lists for the spring 2023 semester.

Eligibility to the President's or Dean's list requires full-time enrollment (minimum of 12 semester hours completed) and the lists are calculated based on G.P.A. hours and term G.P.A.:

President's List: an undergraduate student is required to earn at least a 3.9 grade point average.

Dean's List: an undergraduate student is required to earn at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Graduate or Doctoral Candidates are not eligible for the dean or president's list.

ULM raises more than $2 million in 24 hours during its first Day of Giving

The University of Louisiana Monroe raised more than $2 million in just 24 hours as part of its inaugural Day of Giving on May 17. A total of 86 donors raised $2,319,442 for their favorite colleges and sports on the Bayou.

Two of those donors made individual $1 million gifts. These anonymous donors, empowered by the exciting direction of the University, directed their gift to the College of Business & Social Sciences.

ULM awards 933 degrees at Spring 2023 commencement ceremonies

University of Louisiana Monroe President Dr. Ronald Berry awarded 933 degrees to 924 individual graduates at the Spring 2023 commencement ceremonies on May 13, 2023. Two ceremonies were held for the four colleges, Arts, Education, and Sciences, Business and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Pharmacy, plus the Graduate School.

ULM's product enters the healthy aging market

Almost five years ago, ULM entered into a licensing arrangement with Oleolive Inc, a private biotechnology company, to develop the marketing and commercialization of Dr. Khalid El Sayed's research on the health benefits of olive oil. Dr. El Sayed's research isolated oleocanthal, a phenolic compound found in trace amounts in olive oil and demonstrated oleocanthal's contribution to the health beneficial properties of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).

The result is a product that has been branded Oligen.

ULM's CCAMPIS program helps build crucial pathways for student-parents

ULM's TRIO programs have been a major part of the success of students for decades. The addition of a program to offset childcare costs has been another contributor to that success. Child Care Access Means Parents In School (CCAMPIS) is a federal grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. This program provides financial support to student-parents by assisting them with their childcare payments while enrolled at ULM.

The University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts will host summer music camps for high school students, from June 7-10, 2023, on the ULM campus. These camps are designed for students to learn and grow as drum majors, percussionists, leaders, and musicians. Students will be instructed by ULM faculty and excellent guest instructors.

ULM English class designs new signage for wildlife refuge

English students at the University of Louisiana Monroe designed signage for the nature trail and wildlife pier at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

The students were in the spring 2023 Environmental and Nature Writing course taught by Patrick Morgan, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of English in the College of Arts, Education, and Sciences. ULM students travel to Dominican Republic for first cross-college service-learning trip

Students and faculty from the four colleges of the University of Louisiana Monroe recently traveled to the Dominican Republic for a service-learning trip from April 8 - 14, 2023. Twenty-seven students and faculty from physical therapy/kinesiology, social work, political science, education, and pharmacy traveled to the Dominican Republic to engage in service learning centered around Abba's House Children's Center, located in the barrio of Cienfuegos, a nonprofit organization that educates, feeds, and provides medical care for 125 children living in extreme poverty. Students were also engaged in various learning and practice experiences related to their specific areas of study in Santiago.

The University of Louisiana Monroe chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, a national collegiate honor society, recently made a donation of books and classroom items to the Emily Williamson Laboratory School on the campus of ULM. Phi Kappa Phi donated over 300 items, including children's books and classroom items, to the school. The items were collected as part of Phi Kappa Phi's Fall 2022 Service Project.

The Entrepreneurship Pelican Cup hosted its second annual awards luncheon on April 21, 2023, at ULM's Bayou Pointe Event Center. The ULM Cheer team took home the championship at The College Classic Nationals Competition in the D2 All Girl Division. Warhawk Bundle improves experience for ULM students

In the fall semester of 2022, ULM, in conjunction with Barnes & Noble Education, launched the Warhawk Bundle, a concierge service that allows students to have access to all their course materials before the first day of class at an average savings of 35-50%. Data provided by Barnes & Noble College (BNC) shows that ULM students saved an estimated $628,000 in the fall 2022 semester using Warhawk Bundle.

The staff of ULM's student-run newspaper, The Hawkeye, joined student journalists from twenty-two other universities at the Southeast Journalism Conference 2023 on February 9 -11, 2023, at Nicholls State University. 30th Annual High School Jr./Sr. Juried Art Exhibition on display at ULM's Bry Gallery through Mar. 22

The Bry Art Gallery in the ULM Art Program and School of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Louisiana at Monroe presents the 30th Annual High School Junior/Senior Juried Art Exhibition from February 27 to March 22. Northern Louisiana high school art students were invited to submit to the competition, without fee, artworks from their studio endeavors. These entries were juried by a panel of ULM art faculty members who selected those works that were deemed to exhibit the most creativity and mastery of the chosen medium. Accepted entries are currently being exhibited in the gallery through March 22.

ULM history professor Dr. Ralph W. Brown, III recently published an article in Louisiana History, the journal of The Louisiana Historical Association. The article, entitled "Lyndon B. Johnson's War with the Shreveport Newspapers" was featured in the Fall 2022 edition of Louisiana History. A photo relating to Brown's article was featured on the cover.

ULM Mock Trial Team returns to ORCS

After a 2-year absence during COVID, the ULM Mock Trial Maroon team has advanced to the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS,) the second round of the American Mock Trial Association's national tournament. The team secured their spot in the ORCS after earning the second-highest team ranking at the Houston Regional Tournament from February 17-19.

ULM Criminal Defense Training Academy setting the foundation for all

Since its creation in July 2022, by State Senator Katrina Jackson, the ULM Criminal Defense Training Academy (CDTA) alongside the Louisiana Public Defenders Board (LPDB) has taught public defenders, investigators, social workers, and students all over the state on subjects important to the justice system. These subjects have included direct and cross-examination, obtaining records, initial interviewing, and voir dire.

Dr. Stephen Peters delivers keynote at ULM Black History Program

Nationally renowned author, speaker, and educator Dr. Stephen Peters delivered the keynote address at ULM's annual Black History Program on February 24. Peters' speech highlighted the importance of education and literacy in his personal story, and also black history in America.

"We're here to honor the humanity, the hard work, the blood, sweat, and tears of people who went before us who didn't think about themselves first; they thought about society," said Peters.

ULM Biology and Art Departments join with Ouachita Parish Public Library for Drawn To Biology reception Mar. 2

The University of Louisiana Monroe invites the public to a reception celebrating the Drawn to Biology exhibit on Thursday, March 2 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Sterlington Memorial Branch of the Ouachita Parish Public Library, 305 Keystone Rd. in Sterlington.

Drawn to Biology is a collection of artworks created by ULM Biology students under the guidance of ULM Art students. Attendees of the reception can meet some of the student artists and hear from the professors behind the collaboration. Drawn to Biology is on loan from the ULM Museum of Natural History and is on display at the Sterlington Memorial Branch of the library through April 28, where it may be viewed during regular library hours.

The University of Louisiana Monroe will close for Mardi Gras break Monday, February 20 and Tuesday, February 21. Offices will reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22. Classes will also resume on Wednesday, February 22.

ULM to host Construction Management Open House and Sky Breakers Drone Workshop events on Mar. 4

The University of Louisiana Monroe College of Business and Social Sciences will hold two events on campus, Saturday, March 4.

The School of Construction Management Open House will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Construction Management Building, 513 Filhiol Ave. in Monroe. All prospective high school and transfer students are invited to attend.

The Sky Breakers Drone Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hemphill Hall, 3810 Northeast Dr. in Monroe. All high school and middle school students are invited to learn more about drones from ULM's own Unmanned Aircraft Systems Management professors. The workshop is free to the public.

ULM's Black History Month Program to be held Feb. 24

The University of Louisiana Monroe Cultural Diversity Council and the Office of International Student Programs and Cultural Affairs present "A Black History Program" at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 24, at Bayou Pointe Event Center.



The program will feature keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen Peters. Peters has spent 37+ years in the education realm as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of secondary education, and superintendent. Most of his experiences have been in schools with significant, quick growth, resulting in both national and state blue-ribbon distinction.

ULM Wind Ensemble presents "Fidus Achates," Feb. 13

The ULM Wind Ensemble will present a concert entitled "Fidus Achates," on Monday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium on the ULM campus. The concert is free and open to the public. "Fidus Achates" translates to "Faithful Friend." The concert includes music for soloists and chamber ensembles.

ULM Foundation presents An Evening with Dr. Lynn L. LeBlanc, Feb. 16

The ULM Foundation presents "An Evening with Dr. Lynn L. LeBlanc" Thursday, February 16 at 6:00 p.m. in Biedenharn Recital Hall on the ULM campus. Dr. LeBlanc is Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Sciences and was integral to the program at ULM for decades. ULM is the only university in Louisiana with an Atmospheric Sciences program. Dr. LeBlanc will share the history of the program at ULM and how it evolved over the years.

ULM's Stockley appointed to national Diversity and Inclusion Committee

ULM Honors Program Director, Dr. Joshua Stockley, has been appointed to serve on the National Collegiate Honors Council's Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

The Diversity and Inclusion Committee develops strategies to increase diversity within NCHC and its member institutions, to develop programming for the annual conference and seminars throughout the year, and to produce research and scholarly publications.

ULM to host free FAFSA Open House on Feb. 7

The University of Louisiana Monroe is hosting a free event to help high school and transfer students fill out their FAFSA applications. Students are encouraged to come to the lobby of ULM's Sandel Hall, 4020 Northeast Dr. in Monroe, on Tuesday, February 7 any time between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Staff from ULM's Recruitment and Financial Aid departments will be on hand to help students navigate the form.

ULM School of VAPA presents A Streetcar Named Desire, Feb. 8-11

The School of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) at the University of Louisiana Monroe, will present Tennessee Williams' classic play, A Streetcar Named Desire on February 8, 9, 10, and 11 at 7:30 pm, in the Spyker Theater, behind Brown Auditorium on the ULM campus. The play, set in New Orleans, features an all-student cast of ULM theatre students.

ULM welcomes new Director of Athletics John Hartwell at press conference

The University of Louisiana Monroe officially welcomed newly hired Director of Athletics John Hartwell to campus at a press conference on Monday, January 30. Hartwell comes to ULM after having served as Director of Athletics at Utah State University and ULM's Sun Belt Conference rival Troy University.

"We are truly privileged to be able to announce John Hartwell as our new Director of Athletics," said ULM President Dr. Ron Berry.

ULM unveils William D. Hoover School of Accounting, Financial, and Information Services

The University of Louisiana Monroe held a ceremony on January 24, 2023 to unveil installations that will commemorate the William D. Hoover School of Accounting, Financial, and Information Services. The school is housed in the College of Business and Social Sciences, located in Hemphill Hall.

Members of the Hoover family were on hand to honor the legacy of Mr. Hoover and the contributions he made to ULM and the local business community.

John Hartwell named ULM Director of Athletics

The University of Louisiana Monroe has named John Hartwell as the new Director of Athletics. Hartwell previously served as the Director of Athletics at Utah State University and Troy University.

A press conference is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Monday, January 30 on the seventh floor of the ULM Library.

ULM's Tresner receives residency and grant award

Cliff Tresner, an Associate Professor of Art at ULM, has recently been accepted to the prestigious Vermont Studio Center for a three-week residency in May-June 2023.

A panel of jurors chose Mr. Tresner from a very competitive pool of applicants after reviewing his impressive portfolio of artwork. Mr. Tresner was also given a grant award of $6,750.

ULM partners with LifeShare for blood drive, Jan. 25-26

The University of Louisiana Monroe Medical Laboratory Science Society and LifeShare Blood Center join together for a two-day blood drive to help save lives.



The LifeShare donor bus will be in the Warhawk Circle from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Tuesday, January 25 and Wednesday, January 26.

ULM's Bry Gallery hosts exhibit by Keldrick Dunn

The ULM Art Program and Bry Gallery are currently hosting an exhibition of works titled "Wrld Keeps Turnin" by Minden artist Keldrick Dunn. The exhibition runs from January 18th through February 15th. An artist's talk will be given on Wednesday, February 15th in Sandel 236 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following in Bry Gallery.

ULM Master of Occupational Therapy Program receives 10 year accreditation

The University of Louisiana Monroe Master of Occupational Therapy Program was recently granted full accreditation by the Accreditation Council on Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) during its December 2022 meeting. The accreditation comes after a year-long self-study process and an on-site review by ACOTE in August 2022. The ULM MOT program received the maximum accreditation level of 10 years, indicating that the program showed "no areas of noncompliance" and "demonstrated exceptional educational quality."

ULM receives over $2.5 million in federal funding for projects

The University of Louisiana Monroe has received approval for federal funding for two projects that will make a positive impact for citizens of Louisiana. The amount for both projects totals $2,505,000, which will be funded by the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill recently passed in the U.S. House and Senate. The projects were supported by Louisiana's federal legislators after originating in the form of Community Project Funding (CPF) requests.

ULM VAPA to host first annual Louisiana Horn Day on January 21

On Saturday, January 21, the ULM School of Visual and Performing Arts will host the First Annual Louisiana Horn Day. This free event will include performances, masterclasses, and exhibits dedicated to the horn and horn playing.

The Guest Artist and Clinician will be Brett Hodge, Principal Horn of the Omaha Symphony and Third Horn of the Grant Park Music Festival. Exhibits will be provided by Houghton Horns of Keller, Texas.

ULM biology student awarded research grant

ULM Biology undergraduate Subash Sapkota was awarded a research grant from the Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta) National Biological Honor Society. Sapkota, a native of Nepal, is a double major in Biology and Mathematics at ULM and is a member of the ULM Honors Program.
