ULM Power Lifting Team Visits Nationals for the Second Time

The University of Louisiana at Monroe's Power Lifting team is heading to Omaha, Nebraska to compete at nationals. The meet will be held this weekend April 23-25.

Power Lifting Coach Jeremy Many is accompanying his team to their second appearance at the national event. "Obviously we're excited, workouts have been good over the last two months and hopefully we can go there and compete for a national championship."

At the beginning of this year Many took over as head coach of the 2-year program. In 2001, two athletes qualified for nationals. This year the team is sending nine athletes to represent ULM in Omaha.

The team competing will be comprised of four men: Darren Smith (boys captain); West Monroe, Fred Kalil; Monroe, Bradley Gulotta; Monroe, and Cody Bauman; Maumelle, ARK and five women: Paula Ramirez (President and girls captain); Brazoria, TX, Kelly Roulaine(Secretary); Monroe, Rebekah Cobb; West Monroe, Danielle Miller; Monroe, and Patricia Calhoun. Each athlete will compete individually in various lifting events and weight classes to earn points for the team's over all score.

The athletes say they are well prepared and have worked very hard to get the chance to compete with other universities from around the nation. The ULM power lifting team currently operates as a club sport. The athletes dedicate two hours of their time three days a week on a normal basis throughout the year.

"We have no off season, right now we are really focused on nationals," commented boys captain, Darren Smith. Darren will provide much of the team's experience going into the competition this year. This national meet will be the second of his career.
