# First Recipient of Haacker Award Selected

Muriel Ryder was honored as the first recipient of the Dr. Robert Haacker Award/Scholarship in Long-Term Care Administration. The Dr. Robert Haacker Memorial Award/Scholarship in Gerontology: Long Term Care Administration was established by the family and friends of Dr. Robert Haacker to provide scholarships for deserving students.

Ryder is completing her administrator in training at LONGLEAF Nurse Care Center, Inc. in Ruston under the supervision of Matt Machen. Haacker had a distinguished career in long-term care, spanning 38 years. He became an administrator in 1970, was instrumental in the development of the National Association of Boards of Examiners of Long-Term Care Administrators (NAB), was an educator nationally and internationally on issues of long-term care, and was an advocate for patient rights. He was awarded the NAB Distinguished Service Award in 2001. Haacker was owner of Professional Printing and Publishing, Inc. and Seminars, Investments, and Research, Inc. in Bossier City.

To be eligible for this award/scholarship, the recipient must be a Louisiana resident, be a graduate student, pursuing a Master's degree in Gerontology, be in the Long-Term Care concentration, and possess a 3.25 graduate grade point average or higher. Dr. James Bulot, along with Mrs. Billie Haacker presented the award to Muriel. Chris Haacker, son of the late Dr. Haacker, and Pat Berry, Manager of Professional Printing and Publishing, Inc., were also in attendance.
