Water Ski Team to host 2007 ULM Bayou Classic Sept. 22 - 23

The ULM Water Ski Team will host the 2007 ULM Bayou DeSiard Classic Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 – 23, on campus. All they need is you! The event is free and open to the public, who are encouraged to attend for a day of fun.

Each day’s skiing will begin at 8 a.m. and continue into the afternoon. Saturday will run Men and Women’s Slalom and Trick, while Sunday’s competition will consist of Women’s and Men’s Jump.

Aside from being their home event, the Bayou DeSiard Classic is also one of the conference tournaments for the team. The ULM Water Ski Team competes in the National Collegiate Water Ski Association South Central Region. Other schools in this conference include the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Baylor University, The University of Texas, Louisiana Tech University, Texas State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Texas A&M University, the University of Arkansas, and Texas Tech University.

Collegiate water skiing competition features three events: slalom, trick skiing and jumping. “Spectators can expect to see some of the best water skiing in the world, with the ULM Water Ski Team leading with several current world and national champions,” said Treina Landrum, the team’s coach and director of Recreational Services. “The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has great skiers as well, and will contribute some exciting performances.”

T-shirts, food, and drink will be available for purchase. Spectators are encouraged to bring their favorite lawn chairs and get ready for some good skiing.

“We have a great lineup of skiers and are looking forward to a strong turn out from the ULM students, faculty/staff and community members at our tournament. People really enjoy the spectacular skiing they see from our team. The university is very proud to have such a wonderful group of world class athletes.”

Landrum sees this reflected in sponsorships from ULM groups like the Campus Activities Board and the Student Government Association, as well as in community ones like Gus Campbell Water Sports and Boating Center and the Monroe-West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Their support is vastly appreciated—we could not do this without them.”

The ULM Water Ski Team is the current national champion team and holds 19 National Collegiate Water Ski Association Championship titles; winning 19 of the 27 years the competition has been held. They will compete for their 20th championship this year.
