Composer-in-residence Stephen Paulus’ work to be featured at ULM concerts March 3 – 5

On Monday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall, the University of Louisiana-Monroe Division of Music will present the first of three concerts March 3 – 5 featuring the music of the 2008 Composer-in-residence Stephen Paulus.

The composer, who resides in St. Paul, Minn., will be on the ULM campus March 3 to help with the music students and faculty who will be presenting his works. In all of the activities, Paulus will preside to introduce the pieces to the audiences. All three concerts are open to the public at no charge for admission.

The concert on March 3 will feature the composer's choral music; some of his most reputedly inspiring choral works will be sung by the ULM Concert Choir, conducted by Dr. Deborah Chandler, director of the school’s choral activities.

On Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall, the ULM Symphonic Band and ULM Orchestra will present "The Centennial Fanfare" and a piano concerto, with ULM piano faculty member Richard Seiler accompanied by the ULM Wind Ensemble. "Calm on the Listening Ear of Night" will feature the ULM Orchestra and Chamber Singers, and the orchestra will also play "Voices from the Gallery" with narrator Claire Vangelisti of the ULM voice faculty.

The Wednesday concert March 5 will change venue to The First Presbyterian Church, 1201 Stubbs, for a program at 7:30 p.m. that focuses on the Paulus chamber music, performed by the ULM Music Division Faculty. Jim Reifinger, Mark McCleery, Coralie White, Scot Humes, Chris Thompson, and Seiler will perform. Music graduates Joy and Matthew Witherow are also featured in this performance.

Paulus' composing talents have been described by New Yorker magazine as, "...a bright, fluent inventor with a ready lyric gift." He has been commissioned to write for many respected musical organizations, including the New York Philharmonic, The Dallas and Houston Symphonies, and the St. Louis Operas. The Paulus residency is co-sponsored by the ULM Division of Music and Ecoutez Press.
