ULM’s Division of VAPA features series of concerts in November

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Visual and Performing Arts division will offer several performances in November for music lovers of all stripes.




Friday, Nov. 5 - A low brass concert will be offered at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall. It will feature 10 student soloists as well as the ULM Trombone Ensemble and the ULM Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Micah Everett, assistant professor of music.

Notable works will include “Fanfare for Paratroopers” by Paul Creston, “A Hymn for the Lost and the Living” by Eric Ewazen and “The Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra” by Vaughan Williams.

Admission is free and open to the public.

On Saturday Nov. 6, ULM’s Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Derle R. Long, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium.

The program includes “The Sinfonians March” by James Clifton Williams, “Jericho Rhapsody” by Morton Gould, “Nitro” by Monroe native Frank Ticheli, “On An American Spiritual” by David Holsinger, “The Witch and the Saint” by Steven Reinecke and “Washington Post March” by John Philip Sousa.

Guest conductors will include Dr. Michael Spears, former band director at West Monroe High School and Thomas Ruby, a current graduate student in music education at ULM.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Tuesday Nov. 17 - The ULM Jazz Ensemble presents one of the most popular and exciting concerts given each semester at ULM at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium. The 19-piece big band performs high energy jazz, Latin-jazz, funk and swing music.

ULM music faculty member Larry Anderson directs the ULM Jazz Ensemble. The concert will feature special guest artist Daniel Sumner, guitar, and student vocalist Elizabeth Boston Bennett.

Works such as "Louisiana Hot Sauce," "Orange Colored Sky," "Thou Swell," "Unstuck in Funk," "Gentle Rain" and many others will be performed.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Monday, Nov. 23 - The ULM Percussion Ensemble will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium.

The ensemble will perform popular pieces such as "Kpatsa" by the African Ensemble, "Comedian's Gallop" and "The Bee's Melody" by the Steel Band, "Ku-Ka-Ilimoku," "Triplets," and “Recycled.”

Dr. Mel Mobley and Michael Holdiness, graduate assistant, will contribute.

The concert will feature members of the ULM Dance Department on an African piece. The ensemble will capture the audience’s imagination through a wide variety of percussion instruments and styles.

ULM music faculty member Larry Anderson directs the ULM Percussion Ensemble.

Admission is free and open to the public.
