ULM's Bry Gallery to present lectures, exhibitions and workshops through October

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Division of Art invites the public and the ULM campus family to enjoy free artist lectures and exhibitions available throughout the month of October.

A two-person exhibition by University of Mississippi Department Chair Sheri Fleck Rieth and Professor Tom Lee of the Memphis College of Art is now on display at ULM's Bry Gallery.

The exhibition is titled "etc., etc.," and showcases Rieth's large colorful prints and an assortment of two and three-dimensional works by Lee, who will present an informal gallery talk at 2 p.m., Oct. 21.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 25, Bry Gallery will present "Telegraphies," a solo exhibition of collages by Jennifer Meanley.

Meanley uses vibrant colors and shapes to create an intricate patchwork quilt of mysteriously narrative environments. Her work is said to be "bold, touching, and at times, troubling," in a way that encourages the viewer to question his or her ideas of humanity.

"Her images are a beautifully complex web of foliage, figures and animal forms," said Assistant Bry Gallery Director Dara Engler. "It is about a sense of place, home and time."

Meanley said she is interested in the sense of place, specifically the home, as created during the moment of conflation between these two realities.

She said she intends to create "an active state of tension in which the animate world of the viewer intersects and invests in something otherwise inanimate and still."

Meanley, born in Wolfeboro, N.H., attended Mount Holyoke College, where she received her undergraduate degree in literature in 2001. From 2002 until 2004, she studied painting at the University of New Hampshire. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Indiana University in 2006.

She lives and works in Greensboro, N.C., where she teaches all levels of painting and drawing at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The exhibition will be on display from Oct. 25 – Nov. 18.

An Artist Lecture will be given on the ULM campus at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 21, in Biedenharn Room 134. Meanley will also deliver a Monotype Workshop for ULM art students.

The gallery is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays.

Funding for exhibitions presented by the Division of Art is provided in part by the ULM Campus Activities Board, and supported by the ULM Division of Art Faculty. Tax-exempt donations to support future exhibitions can be made to the ULM foundations/Visual Art fund.
