ULM SGA announces referendum election results

In an online election sponsored by the University of Louisiana at Monroe Student Government Association, the largest percentage of voting ULM students (54.8%) elected not to support the renovation of the Lake C. Oxford Natatorium.

Of the students voting, 905 voted in support of the renovation, and 1,098 voted against the renovation.

The YMCA assumed temporary operational control over the natatorium in January 2012. This agreement may be renewed by mutual agreement of the parties by July 1, 2012 for a one-year period and ending June 30, 2013.

Upon expiration of that agreement, a new agreement will be developed assuming both ULM and YMCA agree to the terms. Under the new agreement, all cost of operations and expenses would be assumed by the YMCA.

Another referendum considered in this election dealt with the development of Bayou Park, a proposed aquatic and recreational facility. The largest percentage of voting ULM students (50.4%) decided not to support the creation of Bayou Park.

Of the students voting, 989 voted in support of Bayou Park, and 1,006 voted against Bayou Park. The students will now focus on dedicating their current funds to other projects.

Yet another referendum included in this election was the Student Support Fee. The largest percentage of voting ULM students (69.9%) voted in favor of the support fee.

Of the students voting, 1,341 voted in support of the support fee, and 577 voted against the fee. Funds generated by this fee will be used to support and enhance critical student support services, initiatives, programming, personnel, operations and projects, benefiting all students at ULM.
