ULM presents free NASA K-12 professional development workshops; registration deadline Feb. 19

The University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Education and Human Development DREAM Office and the NASA Stennis Space Center will present two free workshops for area teachers and education students, Friday, March 1, in Strauss Hall, room 148. The registration deadline is Feb. 19.

The workshops—part of NASA's national initiative to train K-12 educators—will provide teachers with hands-on methods for teaching science, technology, engineering and math. The NASA-developed curriculum will support resources that meet state and national standards.

"Working with national organizations like NASA provides our education students with the latest knowledge and resources in STEM education," notes workshop chairperson Dr. Ava Pugh, ULM professor in curriculum, instruction and leadership. "This is doubly important as we implement the Common Core and the Next Generation of Science Standards."

Beginning at 7:30 a.m., there will be a pre-service teacher workshop where participants will learn ways to incorporate inquiry-based activities for teaching science and mathematics into their classroom curriculums.

Starting at 1 p.m., teachers from the region are invited to participate in a four-hour, hands-on workshop. Teachers will learn state-of-the-art methods for incorporating technology into teaching. They will also receive four continuing learning units (CLUs).

In addition, teachers will learn how to access NASA's Digital Learning network using Skype, participate in a "What's Next for NASA!" session, receive activities and materials from NASA's BEST (Beginning Engineering, Science and Technology, and visit LEGO® in Space.

Both workshops are open to current teachers in public, private and home school settings, as well as future teachers, parents and individuals interested in education. For more information, please call the DREAM office at 318-342-1258 or visit DREAM at http://www.ulm.edu/dream.
