How to Prevent Waste Treatment-Related Nonpoint Source Pollution

Best Management Practices

Methods and procedures that prevent or reduce pollution are known as best management practices (BMP's). The following list of best management practices reduce home sewage system-related nonpoint source pollution.

There are various methods of on-site waste treatment now available, including sand filters, aerobic package treatment plants, disinfection units, nutrient removal systems, and waste water segregation and recycling systems. The LDEQ's Nonpoint Source Unit is examining the use of constructed wetlands and rock-reed filters as possible alternatives to conventional septic tank units, but the waste water is naturally purified through dispersion over a series of rocks and natural marshes.
