Dental Hygiene is one of the most rapidly expanding professions in the Allied Health field. Dental hygienists are licensed oral health professionals who focus on preventing and treating oral diseases and promoting overall health. They are graduates of accredited programs in colleges and universities and must pass national and state board examinations in order to be licensed.
As part of the dental team, the dental hygienist works closely with the dentist. Professional roles in dental hygiene include, but are not limited to, those of a clinician, educator, patient advocate, administrator/manager, and researcher in private and public health care settings.
Making sure your program is the right financial investment is an important part of the search process.

The mouth is the gateway to the body. Dental hygienists study more than just the oral cavity. As a ULM dental hygiene student, you will learn to acquire and review medical histories, identify possible drug interactions and side effects, and perform oral cancer screenings, blood pressure screenings and nutritional counseling. Focusing on the oral cavity, you will learn to expose and read x-rays, provide non-surgical periodontal therapy, apply preventive agents, provide oral healthcare instructions, administer local anesthesia and administer Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen sedation.
This million-dollar clinic on wheels allows ULM dental hygiene students to travel all over Ouachita and the surrounding parishes to provide oral health care for those who may not otherwise have access. The MDHU travels to a different site each semester.
A dental hygiene clinic located on the campus of Riser Elementary and Middle Schools in West Monroe, Louisiana. Students are able to receive routine oral health appointments without leaving campus. Dental cleanings, sealants, x-rays, and fluoride treatments are just a few of the services dental hygiene students provide to Riser students.
Fully Accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association (CODA).
