All of these classes impart and strengthen skills necessary for the 21st century job market, such as analysis of data and evidence, interpretation of written and verbal communication, and the creation of original content.

In addition to core requirements, including composition courses and sophomore surveys, the English major requires Shakespeare and modern literature, theoretical courses and upper-level writing courses. But our major offers a number of options and electives, allowing students to tailor their curriculum towards literary studies, creative writing, or professional writing.
Our major requires additional courses in history and foreign language. As a result, English majors generally complete a minor in either History, French, Spanish, or Classical Studies. As a result of our well-rounded yet adaptable curriculum, our students leave campus uniquely prepared to enter—and excel in—a wide variety of fields.

The Write Place: As a place of employment for our most skillful writers, the Write Place serves as the center for writing help and instruction for the campus community. Many English majors gain valuable insight into the writing process while building their work experience.
Sigma Tau Delta: The International Honor Society in English confers distinction on its members while offering scholarship opportunities, leadership experience, community outreach, and networking.
The Helicon: This yearly print journal is produced by creative writing students and provides opportunities in editing and publishing. Past editors and contributors have been accepted into MFA programs throughout the United States, including the Universities of Iowa, Alabama, Arkansas, Eastern Washington University, and Miami University, among others.
Beer and Bards: Our program sponsors this monthly community reading series at Enoch’s Pub in downtown Monroe. For more than thirty years our creative writing students have read to engaged audiences their poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction.
Internships in Editing with Conradiana and New Queer Medievalisms and with turnow books’ anthologies of international literature
