Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy is a health profession which evaluates and treats people with developmental, social, emotional, or physical problems and helps these individuals develop the skills to overcome the challenges of a disability. The aim is to enable those who are temporarily or permanently disabled to be as independent as possible in the areas of work, home, self-care, and leisure skills while recovering from or adapting to their disability. Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.
Occupational therapy services typically include:
- Customized treatment programs to improve one's ability to perform daily activities.
- Comprehensive home and job site evaluations with adaptation recommendations.
- Performance skills assessments and treatment.
- Adaptive equipment recommendations and usage training.
- Guidance to family members and caregivers.

ULM's Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational
Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
ULM's Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) Program has applied for accreditation and has been granted Candidacy Status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. The program must have a preaccreditation review, complete an on-site evaluation, and be granted Accreditation Status before its graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
ULM's MOT Bridge Program is on of only 26 OTA to OT Bridge Program in the world.
The OTD Program is one of only two OTD programs in Louisiana.
Study and learn with Nationally-recognized and professionally-involved faculty with specialty credentials provide caring, individualized student support.
The Occupational Therapy clinic provides an environment where adults and children can receive clinical occupational therapy services provided by students supervised by licensed and certified faculty.
OT students also complete clinical fieldworks in clinical settings and hospitals all across Louisiana and the United States.
Graduates have had a 100% employment rate in a variety of settings within and outside of Louisiana for the last several years.
The Occupational Therapy programs ensures student learning by promoting a comprehensive context for the intellectual, scientific, cultural, technological, and economic development of its diverse student population.

Occupational therapy practitioners work in a wide range of settings including schools, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, home health, outpatient rehabilitation clinics, psychiatric facilities, and community health programs. School systems, hospitals, and long-term-care facilities are the primary work settings for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants.
