Community Engagement

The University of Louisiana Monroe campus builds a strong relationship with the community through volunteerism, service learning, and carrying a ULM presence to local events.

focuses its service efforts primarily in the following areas:

YOUTH & EDUCATION

We value youth in our area and believe educational opportunities are what transform lives. During President Berry’s Investiture Week activities, a reading project began called, “Take Flight Through Reading.” Volunteers read an original ULM book, “There’s a Bridge on the Bayou”, to third-grade classrooms in Ouachita Parish. Each book contained a $500 scholarship, redeemable when the student begins their college career at ULM in 2031.

BEAUTIFICATION

The University of Louisiana Monroe partners with beautification organization, Ouachita Green for on and off campus litter cleanups and beautification projects. The ULM Wesley Foundation is a hosting area for Ouachita Green’s Annual Ouachita Parish Water Sweep, in which students clean along the banks of Bayou Desiard on paddle boards and kayaks. In 2021, the ULM location had the highest recorded student attendance in history.

FOOD INSECURITY

Every year, the University of Louisiana Monroe and Louisiana Delta Community College partner to meet a need through the annual MLK Day of Service event. In 2021, ULM collected 3,710 lbs. of food that will allow the Northeast Louisiana Food Bank to provide a total of 3,092 meals to the community. ULM Athletic groups, Greek organizations, and other RSO’s strive to be proactive in their efforts to meet fight food insecurity in our area.

DISASTER RESPONSE

Natural disasters such as floods or hurricanes can be a common occurrence in Louisiana. The University of Louisiana Monroe isn’t a stranger to such occurrences. But even amidst a crisis, students, faculty, and staff are quick to respond proactively with heart and hands of service. After Hurricane Laura, ULM students gathered to create a disaster response initiative by picking up storm debris in community neighborhoods. ULM also hosted a Community Supply Drive for sister institution, McNeese State University in Lake Charles, as they faced severe storm damage.
