The Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (BS) online offering is a 126-hour program to prepare a student to teach in elementary classrooms grades 1-5.

Our objective is to prepare, at the undergraduate level, prospective teacher candidates who will be liberally educated, knowledgeable in research-based effective teaching strategies, competent in pedagogy, methodology, and grounded in professionalism, proficient in assessing and improving student learning, and responsive to the moral and aesthetic obligations inherent to the school and multi-cultural community.

Graduates of this program will earn certification in elementary education.

This program is part of a Teacher Certification Reciprocity agreement with other states which accept completion of Louisiana approved teacher education preparation programs from regionally accredited institutions as eligibility for certification in their state.

Admission Requirements

Prior to student teaching, Teacher Candidates must meet eligibility requirements for Louisiana initial teacher certification, which includes a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above on all courses and passing scores on all applicable portions of PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II.

For formal admission to Teacher Education, candidates must have passing scores on PRAXIS I (or 22 Composite ACT), a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above on all courses, and must submit an application electronically. Admission to Teacher Education is a requirement for enrollment in Professional Courses included in the second half of the program.

Professional Semester 1:ELED 3040, SPED 2002, PSYC 3001 and CURR 4050 are scheduled as a 15 hours per week block in which candidates teach 50 hours in an elementary school during the semester

Professional Semester 2: ELED 3041, CURR 3077 and MATH 3050 are scheduled as a 12 hours per week block in which candidates teach 60 hours in an elementary school during the semesters

Professional Semester 3: ELED 3042, ELED 4041, ELED 4042, ELED 4043 and EDFN 4001 are scheduled as a 15 hours per week block in which candidates teach 70 hours in an elementary school during the semester

Total number of hours of direct teaching experience prior to student teaching: 180
