ULM’s Gateway to OnLine Degrees program, or GOLD, which is the clearinghouse for online degrees, offers the opportunity for students to enroll in its psychology program, which already reports a growing number of students and a large number pursing a degree. Most of ULM’s psychology faculty and instructors have been teaching for many years and students report high satisfaction with their psychology classes, according to program officials.
Dr. David Williamson, department head for the department of psychology at the College of Education and Human Development, said that some of the program’s popularity stems from the fact that the field provides a knowledge base for understanding human behavior that has wide applications in professions like law, medicine, teaching, business, and other fields. "We are expanding knowledge and exploring the mind,” he said. Psychology, which is the scientific study of animal and human behavior, is a broad and diverse discipline that ranges from studies of brain function to studies of behavior. Graduates of the ULM program are eligible to pursue a variety of careers because of its foundation in four major content areas including research methods, biological and behavioral processes, cognitive studies, and social behavior and development, according to Williamson.
