The meeting will be held Oct. 15-16, 2009, at ULM. “It’s a huge honor for ULM to host this event on our campus, since we’ve never hosted it before,” said Colvin. “Graduate school deans from all of Louisiana’s institutions of higher education, both public and private, will be here.” Northwestern State University in Natchitoches hosted the most recent gathering, where Colvin gave a presentation on the challenges and opportunities facing graduate assistants at Louisiana’s universities. “Our Council explored institutional incentive packages currently offered at universities within the state, and we realized that we are underfunding our graduate assistants compared to the rest of the region,” she said. “It’s a challenge, especially in these economic times.” Added Colvin, “However, we’re going to have to develop ways to deliver those incentives, so we can continue recruiting the best and brightest graduates to our universities.” Included in Colvin’s many duties as interim Dean is helping to raise endowment funds to entice graduate students to ULM. Colvin said she is honored by her appointment as Council chair and will continue to set ULM apart as a special place for graduate students who want to advance their education.
