The announcement of the appointment was made earlier this month by Gov. Bobby Jindal, who touched on education and children’s issues in Tuesday night’s response to President Barack Obama’s speech.

Jindal named Lisa Miller, associate provost for enrollment, as one of 15 board members of a board responsible for the fund that is dedicated solely for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

“I am very honored to be chosen and I look forward to the work we will accomplish,” said Miller. “I’m very flattered to be a part of a committee with so many distinguished people whom I’m able to serve the children of our state.”

The board was created by 1983 legislation that allows funds to be generated in the form of an additional surcharge on duplicate birth certificates and by allowing individuals to voluntarily designate refunds of their state income tax.

The Children’s Trust Fund also receives state general and federal grant funds.

The purpose of the board and the fund that it oversees is to establish plans for the prevention of child abuse and neglect, along with periodic reviews to Louisiana’s governor and the legislature, and funding community-based child abuse and neglect programs through its grant process.

Miller will serve as a representative of the university community, as required by Louisiana statute.
