Opening doors to new opportunities with summer study abroad in France
Bonjour ! Parlez-vous français?
For students involved in the summer program sponsored by the University of Louisiana Foreign Languages Department-French, the answer to that question is a resounding "Oui!"
ULM Study Abroad students and faculty at Nimes Gardens in France.
Every summer, ULM sponsors a two-week immersion in Montpellier, France. Students take courses taught completely in French at the Institut Linguistique Adenet, which is consistently ranked among the top five languages institutes in that country.
Students who participate receive three credit hours, while also experiencing French culture in a unique and unforgettable way.
The students live with French host families, which provide constant exposure to the language and a real-life experience outside the classroom.
"There is a sizable international population, so in addition to immersion in French culture, students meet people and make friends from around the world," said Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Languages Dr. Chris Michaelides.
Kirby Buttitta, (B.A.,'11), said the experience solidified her career plans.
"The program opened so many doors for me, and without it, I would not have the opportunity to teach in France in the fall," she said.
During the program, 40 hours of courses are conducted in the morning, followed by explorations of Montpellier and surrounding areas in the afternoons. Students also have the option of extending their trip.
The program is open to students of every major, but in order to participate, students are required to have at least a basic course in French.
It is recommended that students have a second semester of background as well, but not required.
The program's covered expenses include tuition, room and board (including breakfast and dinner) and some regional excursions.
Informational meetings about the program will be held in the fall.
