The Monroe Chamber of Commerce commissioned this informative and in-depth assessment of Ouachita Parish and its rich history from Harvey, also incoming department head of history, effective August.
Harvey has instructed at ULM since 1999. Prior to that in 1998, he taught on a visiting appointment at Auburn University, where he also received his Ph.D. He achieved a bachelor’s of science degree in marketing from Auburn University in 1989. He earned his bachelor’s of science degree in education in 1992 and his master’s degree in history in 1994, both from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Harvey published his first book in 2002, “A Question of Justice: New South Governors and Education, 1968-1976.” He is currently completing a second book, “An Easy Man to Believe In: Reubin Askew and the Making of Modern Florida.” He is also co-editor of a collection of essays on southern history, entitled “History and Hope in the Heart of Dixie.” He has received numerous teaching awards, both at ULM and at Auburn University.
