Jones

Dr. Terry Jones, professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, delivered a presentation on June 13 at the Ouachita Parish Public Library main branch for the Northeast Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society.

Jones’ topic, “The Importance of Milliken’s Bend in the Civil War,” covered information about the small river town located in Madison Parish that was used as a supply base by the Union Army during the 1863 Vicksburg Campaign. It was one of the first battles in which the Union Army used soldiers of African descent.

Jones is scheduled to speak again in the next few months on topics related to the Civil War: at 6:30 p.m., July 15, at the Lincoln Parish Library, on the Lewis and Clark Expedition; at noon, July 19, at the Winnfield Kiwanis Club, on Benjamin "Beast" Butler and his controversial time at New Orleans during the Civil War; and Sept. 16 at the Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table on a topic not yet selected.

His college-level textbook, "The American Civil War," was published last year by major textbook publisher McGraw-Hill.
