The convention, held in Lafayette this June, offers continuing education to Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists as well as the opportunity to make connections with others in the professions.

Eight Speech-Language Pathology Master’s students represented ULM:

  • Emily Arrington of Monroe
  • Toya Daughtrey of Shreveport
  • Julianne Grant of Crossett, Ark.
  • Whitney Hawkins of Houma
  • Chelsey Martin of Delhi
  • B. Kendall O’Hara of Loma Rica, Calif.
  • Jennifer Stevens of Stonewall
  • Sarah Turknett of Galliano

This team of eight competed against other Speech-Language Pathology students from LSU-NO, ULL, and Southeastern.

According to Dr. Johanna Boult, department head of Speech-Language Pathology, the Quiz Bowl topics “related to the scientific and clinical study of communication sciences and disorders.  Specific topics were anatomy (of the speech and hearing mechanisms), voice disorders, articulation and phonological disorders, neurological disorders, language acquisition theories and theorists, and research design and statistics.”

ULM correctly answered the final question: 'What was the first and original name of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association?' with 'The American Academy of Speech Correction' to win the Quiz Bowl.
