In light of the recent bacterial meningitis cases in Lafayette, the University of Louisiana at Monroe Student Health Services is taking a very proactive approach in informing students, faculty and staff about possible symptoms of the disease and the availability of the meningitis vaccine at Student Health Services.

The university has sent a mass e-mail to students, faculty and staff reminding them of the risk factors associated with meningitis. ULM officials have also distributed flyers containing information about meningitis in each dormitory room.

Marge Michel, clinic manager of Student Health Services, said winter and early spring are peak periods for outbreaks of meningitis, which is frequently mistaken for the flu.

“We have been collaborating with multiple departments across campus and with our local health department to insure our students, faculty and staff have the knowledge base and resources necessary to address their health concerns about meningococcal disease. Meningococcal vaccination is available at Student Health Services. Resource materials and counseling are available to assist students with making an informed decision about their risks for meningitis.”
