April Nexus discussions target "The existential dilemma of the displaced person" April 14
The educational and cultural Chautauqua Nexus series will round out its 2008 spring semester roster with three scheduled discussions.
Otto Ochs will examine “The Existential Dilemma of the Displaced Person” Monday, April 14.
Ochs will “explore, through [his] personal experience (living in a Displaced Person’s Camp near Munich, Germany, from 1945 to 1956) the social/psychological/metaphysical construct of the displaced person, and his/her crucible, and how the displaced person learns to survive as one who has been ousted from his sense of place, home, community that provided the environment of nurture and well-being. Thus, being forcibly removed from that environment will cause the ‘displaced person’ possible years of wandering in the abyss of ‘Persona Non Grata.’”
On Monday, Apr 21, Yung Yu Choi will speak about “China.”
Dillion Garcia’s Monday, April 28 Nexus: "A Conversation on Cursing: Origins, Myths, and Misconceptions.”
About the Chautauqua Nexus:
Nexus presentations are free, informal and open to the public. Everyone is invited to attend. ULM FRYS students are encouraged to attend and sign in.
“The Nexus is an opportunity for intellectual and cultural exchange,” said Joe McGahan, ULM psychology professor and Chautauqua Nexus organizer. “This year we're focusing on a change in scheduling (with Mondays being the primary meeting day) intended to free us to develop a think tank, or multiple think tanks, that, like the Nexus, will build on the cultural resources of our community. Whereas the Nexus series will continue to be about virtually any topic that people find interesting, the think tank will focus on economic security and economic development—to a large extent, we’d like to focus on the potential of research and development.”
