Warhawks Mentoring program holds
celebration banquet

The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Warhawks Mentoring program held its Celebration and Reflection Banquet on May 3 at the University Conference Center. The banquet was held to recognize the group’s achievements during the 2009-2010 school year.

The program provides college and career readiness to high school students through mentoring. The group says that each high school student is matched with a ULM mentor to help them achieve personal and academic success.

Twenty-seven mentees from Carroll and Wossman High Schools and 23 undergraduate mentors from ULM participated in the program this year.

Three of the mentors were recognized as outstanding: Myesha Allen, a pre-speech language pathology from Natchitoches; Elise Lewis, a biology student from Rayne and Ahmaad Solmone, a mass communication student from Hammond.

Stephen Black, the grandson of the late Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black and a noted advocate of civic responsibility and engagement, delivered the keynote address.

The Warhawks Mentoring Program Project Team includes Dr. Wayne Brumfield, Dr. Catherine Estis, Dr. Ann M. Findley, Sami R. Owens and Dr. Pamela H. Saulsberry, all of ULM, and Barry Jones of Wossman High School.

The Warhawks Mentoring program is part of the Learn and Serve Mentoring Program and funded through a University of Louisiana System Serves grant.
