Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Nickelson’s appointment to the 13-member commission in March. Commissioners, who are chosen to represent the interests and needs of a particular area of the state, meet once a month to discuss emerging trends in addiction, the needs of the citizens of Louisiana, and how best to serve those needs, according to Commission spokesman Daryl Koerth. The Commission is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. The Commission has historically been involved in a number of activities each year to raise and promote awareness about addiction prevention, treatment, and recovery in Louisiana. One such event is called Recovery Day, and is held during the month of September (the National Recovery Month) to bring the community together in celebration and promote the important message of recovery. Nickelson, a professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, serves as the clinical pharmacist for the psychiatric unit at LSU-Monroe. Information about the Commission can be found at the following link: Louisiana Commission on Addictive Disorders.
