Head of ULM Opera to publish book
Clark
Dr. Mark R. Clark, associate professor of music and head of opera at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, was recently awarded a book publishing contract for his new book about Broadway song repertoire.
The book, "Broadway Songs: Finding the Truth," is a song by song analysis, background, and context of over 160 songs, for study by singing students—and for their teachers—in universities.
Included within each entry is an interview with singers who have created, or re-created in revival, the roles, and in some cases, the composers of the shows.
Among the interviews include: "Hello Dolly" composer Jerry Herman; composer of "Annie" and "Bye Bye Birdie," Charles Strouse; and John Kander, composer of "Chicago" and "Cabaret."
The book is scheduled to be released by Oxford University Press in 2014.
Clark has taught at ULM for over six years.
He received his doctorate degree in opera production from the University of Washington, and received performance degrees in vocal performance and pedagogy from Indiana University.
