Sandra Hill, assistant professor of English, is taking her students outside of the classroom. Hill’s technical writing students are reaching out to the community through service-learning projects in collaboration with the Northeast Louisiana chapter of the Red Cross, the Food Bank, Louisiana MENTOR, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and The Humane Society of Monroe. In the ULM community, the students will assist with the environmental initiative Adopt-a-Spot and will work on health issues in collaboration with the Activity Center. Of the outreach, Hill said, “Service-learning work gives students an opportunity to understand and participate in civic activities, learn about their community, and practice the theories and skills of their academic courses through real-world, hands-on projects. The work strengthens relationships between the university and the community.” |
