Michael J. Cappel, University of Louisiana at Monroe associate professor of social work, was awarded a “Meritorious Service Medal” at the Sons of Confederate Veterans national convention held in August in Mobile, Ala.

Cappel has long been active in numerous veterans’ organizations and movements. In May, he was recognized as “Compatriot of the Year” at the annual Sons of Confederate Veterans conference in Shreveport.
