MONROE, LA – The University of Louisiana Monroe’s TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) successfully hosted its tenth annual WINGS Camp from August 13–15, 2025. This three-day summer bridge program welcomed a select group of incoming first-time freshmen who are participants in the federally funded TRIO SSS program, designed to support first-generation, low-income, and disabled students in their pursuit of higher education.
WINGS Camp offers students an early move-in opportunity, allowing them to settle into campus life before the official start of the semester. Throughout the camp, students engaged in a series of workshops focused on easing the transition from high school to college. Topics included academic expectations, study skills, career planning, and the “8 Dimensions of Wellness,” a holistic approach to mental health and personal development.
Parents also participated in a dedicated session that outlined the challenges their students may face during their first year and offered strategies for providing meaningful support throughout the transition.
Academic preparation was a key focus, with specialized workshops led by ULM faculty. Dr. Telitha Doke presented strategies for success in college-level mathematics, while Dr. Ann Findley offered insights into mastering biology coursework. Both sessions emphasized study techniques, tutoring resources, and proactive learning habits.
Kellye Blackburn from ULM’s Career and Student Development led a workshop on campus involvement and career readiness. She introduced tools for resume building, internships, and the Suitable app for tracking co-curricular achievements. Blackburn also encouraged students to attend the upcoming campus job fair and get involved in clubs and leadership roles to enrich their college experience.
Cross Keys Bank and Origin Bank generously supported the TRIO SSS WINGS Camp by donating essential supplies to enhance the student experience. Their contributions included koozies, notebooks, pens, pencils, and hand sanitizer, helping ensure participants were well-equipped for a successful and engaging camp.
TRIO SSS Mentors and student workers played a vital role in the camp, sharing personal experiences and guiding participants through campus tours to reduce first-day anxiety. One-on-one advising sessions with TRIO staff helped students review their course schedules, make necessary adjustments, and discuss anticipated academic challenges.
The camp concluded with a campus-wide scavenger hunt organized by the ULM Recruiting Office. Students explored key campus landmarks and ended the activity at the bayou bridge near Schultz Cafeteria, where they fed turtles—a lighthearted moment to cap off an enriching experience.
“This year marked my first full involvement in WINGS Camp,” said Tammy Anderson, Associate Director for On-Campus TRIO Programs. “As a first-generation college student, I deeply relate to the emotions these students are experiencing. TRIO SSS provides the kind of support I wish I had when I started college. Our staff understands the journey because many of us have lived it.”
