Study shows ULM has $566 million impact on NELA economy

A recent study found the University of Louisiana Monroe contributed $566.8 million to the Northeast Louisiana* economy in Fiscal Year 2017-2018.

Conducted for ULM by Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), the compelling study shows how the university is unmatched in its positive impact to the students, the region and the state. The university supports a variety of businesses and it benefits society as an economic driver, among other contributions.

Bruno accepts NLEP Top Project Award for VCOM

SHREVEPORT-MONROE -- North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) honored the best in economic development at its Annual Meeting, called Top Event today, Thursday, January 17, 2019.

ULM offering new dual degree for PharmD and MBA

The University of Louisiana Monroe is now offering a dual degree program for a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Master of Business Administration.
Because of the growing need for pharmacy professionals to be knowledgeable in the business of operating a pharmacy, the ULM College of Pharmacy and the ULM College of Business and Social Sciences have developed a program for the professional pharmacy student to graduate with both a PharmD and MBA.

Jazzmine Williams' painting of a ULM scene is a winner in national art contest

In her corner of the senior artists studio at the University of Louisiana Monroe in Stubbs Hall, Jazzmine Williams has a wonderful space that's both neat and creatively messy. There are impressive examples of her talent in painting and ceramics.
"I'm a senior and I study ceramics, also known as pottery. I also received a talent grant from the art program this year for my artwork," said Williams, who will graduate in the spring.
Even with ceramics as her concentration, Williams has won an impressive award for her painting.

Katie Dawson named teacher of the year for her work with ULM Online

Katie Dawson, Interim Director of ULM Online, has been named the 2018 Post Secondary Teacher of the Year for Region 8, an award she received for her innovative work with the University of Louisiana Monroe's online programs.

She was presented with a certificate on Nov. 28, 2018 at the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators 34th Annual Conference. The association's goal is to "enable the full utilization of the power of technology to assist in the fulfillment of the goals of education."

760 ULM students graduate at Saturday Commencement

Torrential rains and gusty winds did not stop 760 soon-to-be graduates from filling Fant-Ewing Coliseum on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018. Joining them were friends and family, leaders of the University of Louisiana Monroe and honored guests.

President Dr. Nick J. Bruno commented on the hours-long deluge, saying, "Since being president, we've never had a rainy day on commencement. I guess that record is broken."

He then said, "I congratulate each of the candidates. It is a very special day regardless of the weather and we celebrate their accomplishments."

Mother: Our daughter gets the best care at ULM Occupational Therapy

There is a very special place at the University of Louisiana Monroe. It's colorful, and bright, and filled with voices. It's the Occupational Therapy Center in Caldwell Hall. The center, under the direction of Dr. Patti Calk, is making life better by helping adults and children with different challenges.

ULM Fall-Summer Commencement 2018 is Saturday at 10 a.m.

The University of Louisiana Monroe presents the Summer-Fall Commencement Exercises 2018 at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 8. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. For information on commencement, please see ulm.edu/commencement-info .

President Nick J. Bruno will confer 783 degrees upon 780 graduates. There are 41 associate's degrees; 576 bachelor's degrees; 1 Doctor of Pharmacy degree; 154 master's degrees; three Doctor of Education degrees and eight Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Black Bayou Brass presents free holiday concert Dec. 6

Black Bayou Brass, resident faculty brass ensemble in the School of Visual and Performing Arts, will perform a free holiday concert on Thursday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe. Ensemble members are Dr. James Boldin, Associate Professor of Music, Dr. Adam Johnson, Assistant Professor of Music, and Dr. Eric Siereveld, Assistant Professor of Music. The group will be joined on the piano and organ by ULM Professor of Music Dr. Richard Seiler.

AKA honors Dr. Bruno with CAMEO Award for dedication to education, diversity, community

Dr. Nick J. Bruno, President of the University of Louisiana Monroe, has been recognized for his outstanding work in education, diversity and the community with the CAMEO Award from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Omicron Iota Chapter.

The awards ceremony was Nov. 16 at Delta Community College with the theme "Exemplifying Excellence Through Service." CAMEO stands for Community Service, Arts, Medicine, Education, Organization. The CAMEO Awards began in 2003 when, according to the sorority, they "chose to celebrate those in the community who gave tirelessly of their time and talents to promote the greater good of mankind."

Sky high: ULM's Stephanie Robinson licensed to fly drones

The University of Louisiana Monroe's UAS Management (Unmanned Aerial Systems aka drone) program has achieved a milestone: UAS major Stephanie Robinson is the program’s first FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) licensed female drone pilot. Robinson mastered the demands of this innovative and unique program and passed the FAA small UAS pilot knowledge exam with flying colors.

Tuesday is the School of Visual and Performing Arts annual Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium. This special event is free and all are invited. The concert will feature the ULM Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, University Chorale, and Dance Repertory Ensemble. The doors open at 7 p.m.

Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. is the lighting of the ULM Christmas tree, located in Scott Plaza. The event is sponsored by the Student Life and Leadership.

La. Cancer Foundation supports ULM breast cancer research with $10K donation

For 13 years, the Louisiana Cancer Foundation has financially supported breast cancer research at the University of Louisiana Monroe with donations totaling $117,500. Tuesday, Dr. Paul Sylvester, Associate Dean of Research in the ULM College of Pharmacy, accepted a $10,000 donation from LCF Executive Director James Adams.

College of Business and Social Sciences hosting conference on Age and Aging Tuesday

The College of Business and Social Science, Gerontology Program, at the University of Louisiana Monroe will be hosting the "Conference on Age and Aging: Multi-perspectives" from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 13 on the second floor of the Student Union Building (SUB).
The goal is to educate people about healthy aging vs. unhealthy aging, focusing on the prevention of non-normal aging issues, and addressing the negative stereotypes of old age.

Talbert receives more than $352K to study obesity, diabetes

The number is staggering, 100 million U.S. adults are diabetic or prediabetic according to a June 2017 report by the Centers for Disease Control. In Louisiana the latest number by the American Diabetes Association is 575,000 adults with diabetes.

A researcher at the University of Louisiana Monroe is working to lower this number. Dr. Matthew Talbert, ULM Associate Professor of Biology, has received a $352,500 grant to support his research into the obesity-diabetes connection. The grant is from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases.

ULM mock trial team brings first place home from Nordic Battle

The University of Louisiana Monroe's mock trial team won the University of Minnesota's Nordic Undergraduate Mock Trial Battle in Minneapolis, Minn., on October 12-14, 2018. ULM swept Macalester College, the University of St. Thomas, and the University of Missouri in the first two days of the competition. They split decision with undefeated Carleton College to take first place on the final day of the competition.

$350K grant funds more research with olive oil breakthroughs developed at ULM

Research into the treatment of Alzheimer's disease using a component of virgin olive oil, which the process of extracting was developed by researchers at the University of Louisiana Monroe, will continue thanks to a $350,000 grant. The grant was announced Monday at a press conference at ULM. The funding is from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute on Aging.

ULM awarded $90K to teach drone technology for commercial uses

There is more to flying a drone than maneuvering it through backyard trees, especially when it is being used for commercially.

They are known as drones and also referred to as Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). A UAS has commercial and practical applications which are growing in demand. To meet that demand, the Delta Regional Authority created the program, Workforce Development: Training the Trainer Using Unmanned Aerial Systems.

ULM Online replacing textbooks with digital materials

To help ease the financial burden on students, University of Louisiana Monroe leaders decided to change from expensive commercial textbooks to cost-effective digital books and related materials. As a result, students will save approximately $340,000 per year.
Known as Open Education Resources (OER), the digital study materials include textbooks, eBooks, software and internet resources.

Letlow named Director of External Affairs and Strategic Communications at ULM

Dr. Julia Letlow has been named Executive Director of External Affairs and Strategic Communications at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
Letlow most recently served as the Director of Marketing and Communications where she helped lead the rebranding initiative for ULM.
In her new role, she serves as the governmental liaison on behalf of the university. Her work includes developing and strengthening relationships with governmental policy-makers who have a direct impact on ULM. Letlow also supervises strategic communications and initiatives to promote a positive public opinion of ULM.

ULM gets nearly $275K for mobile weather lab

The National Science Foundation awarded the Major Research Instrumentation award to ULM so that the university can by a compact, portable Doppler Wind Lidar system. This equipment uses lasers to study atmospheric characteristics such as wind, turbulence and aerosols. It will allow ULM to better research storms and air quality to improve public safety and human health.

The University of Louisiana Monroe joins only 147 providers with accreditation by the CAEP Accreditation Council. ULM and the other providers were approved under the CAEP teacher preparation standards -- rigorous, nationally recognized standards that were developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation.

English professor Jana Giles receives prestigious La. state grant

As part of the Regents Awards to Louisiana Artists and Scholars (ATLAS) Program, a panel of out-of-state experts evaluated a grant proposal written by Dr. Jana Giles, University of Louisiana Monroe associate professor of English, and deemed it "excellent." Based on the panel's recommendation, the Board of Regents funded Giles's project, allowing her a year-long sabbatical to complete her project. Giles's grant of $38,057 was one of only eight awarded in the state.

Tim Brando is guest host at ULM's The Pursuit

ULM's The Pursuit, the university's premier event, will be 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the new Bayou Pointe Student Event Center, 1 Warhawk Way.

The event is sponsored by BancorpSouth.

This year's special guest host is FOX Sports personality Tim Brando. Brando is a long-time sports announcer who joined FOX in 2014. In 2017 he signed a multi-year extension to announce college football and basketball on FOX.

3 ULM programs awarded over $73K from Living Well Foundation

The Living Well Foundation has awarded a total of $73,295 to three University of Louisiana Monroe programs that serve the northeast Louisiana community.

The money, awarded by the foundation during its fall grant cycle, expands Living Well's commitment to the university. It already provides ongoing funding to ULM's dental hygiene clinic and Autism Center.
