ULM receives research grant for promising treatment of psoriasis

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research announces the University of Louisiana Monroe has received a grant award of $84,600 from the Louisiana Biomedical Research Network.

The funding is for the "The Role of mTOR and its targeting by fisetin for treating psoriasis" project written by Jean Chamcheu, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy.

Friends and family joined the graduates of the University of Louisiana Monroe on Saturday, Dec. 14 for the Summer/Fall 2019 Commencement Ceremony in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. A total of 770 degrees were awarded.

The University of Louisiana Monroe presents the Summer/Fall Commencement Ceremony 2019 at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 14. The ceremony is in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

President Nick J. Bruno, Jr., Ph.D., will confer 772 degrees (204 summer and 568 fall) upon 766 graduates. There are 40 associate's degrees, 524 bachelor's degrees, one Doctor of Pharmacy degree; 191 master's degrees; eight Doctor of Education degrees and eight Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The guest speaker will be Louisiana Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Kim Hunter Reed.

ULM reaffirmed through 2029 - University enters 65th year of continuous accreditation

The University of Louisiana Monroe has received official confirmation of institutional accreditation for the next 10 years from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The reaffirmation of accreditation, which ULM has held continuously since 1955, was officially announced on Dec. 10, 2019, by the SACSCOC Board of Trustees during their annual meeting in Houston.

ULM's 90.3 KEDM gives the 'Joy of Learning' to area students

KEDM Public Radio, 90.3 FM, at the University of Louisiana Monroe is providing books to second and third grade students at area schools as part of the "Give the Joy of Learning" year-end fundraising campaign.

The campaign, now in its fourth year, provides books to second and third graders in three parishes in Northeast Louisiana. The campaign aims to impact 2,000 students in 12 schools.

John Herrock receives grant to develop material for OSHA website

The Office of Sponsored Programs and Research announces the University of Louisiana Monroe has received Louisiana's first Susan Harwood Training Grant funded by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

John Herrock, director of the Asbestos and Mold Analysis Lab in the ULM College of Pharmacy, received $31,396 to develop training and educational materials for the OSHA website, osha.gov.

Cindy and Dennis Rogers establish ULM scholarship in social work

In appreciation for the degree which led to a 43-year career, the Cindy and Dennis Rogers Endowed Scholarship in Social Work has been established at the University of Louisiana Monroe.

Cindy Rogers was the special guest at a recent press conference to announce the scholarship. Her husband Dennis died in May 2019. The scholarship was created with a $50,000 donation from the couple and a matching $10,000 gift from the ULM Foundation.

ULM introduces Compete LA, Regions provides $20,000 for scholarships

Compete LA is an innovative initiative by the University of Louisiana System to assist adults ready to complete their college degrees. The University of Louisiana Monroe is featuring 12 programs through ULM Online as part of Compete LA. Degrees include those that prepare students to meet career goals in business, education, healthcare and the public sector. The nine universities in the UL System are participating in Compete LA.

Warhawk Family saddened by loss of Emily Williamson

University of Louisiana Monroe President Nick J. Bruno, Jr., Ph.D., expressed deep sorrow over the death of Emily Williamson, longtime director of the University of Louisiana Monroe Child Development Center.

"Emily Williamson was a wonderful person who was truly dedicated to this university," said Bruno. "She deeply loved ULM, especially the children under her care at the Child Development Center. On behalf of the Warhawk Family, we extend condolences to her husband, Robert, and her family. She will be greatly missed."

ULM mourns the passing of President Emeritus Dwight D. Vines

The University of Louisiana Monroe has lost a beloved past president and Northeast Louisiana has lost one of its most ardent supporters with the death of Dwight D. Vines, Ph.D. Vines died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29 at First Baptist Church in Calhoun. Interment will be at the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Rayville, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe. Visitation is 5-9 p.m., Monday, Oct. 28 at the church.
Vines served as president from 1976-1991. He joined the university, then Northeast Louisiana State University, in 1958 as an instructor of management and became a full professor. Vines served as dean of the College of Business from 1964 until he was named president.

In 1984, U.S. President Ronald Reagan called for a ban on chemical weapons and Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg was born.

That year Camile Currier, ULM's Vice President for Student Affairs, was campus director of recreational services.

"I was at home one Saturday afternoon and the Fifth Avenue Mile came on TV. It's a big race held in New York City every year. I was an old trackman and I thought, 'That would be an easy event to do,'" Currier said.

In less than a month, the crew from the bayou will defend that title and compete against the other most talented student-athlete water skiers in the country for an unprecedented 30th national championship. The Warhawks will travel to Bell Acqua Lakes, Calif., near Sacramento, with one goal in mind: to out-ski everyone else.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe recently opened its newest cutting-edge opportunity, the Thomas J. Nicholson Virtual Reality Lab. Thanks to a generous donation from the Jean and Saul A. Mintz Foundation, a lab with 28 student stations with Oculus Go 64GB VR headsets and headphones and an instructor's station has been established in the ULM Library. It also features two networked projection screens.

Grant will help Kitty DeGree School of Nursing increase students, faculty

In 2018, the Louisiana Center for Nursing reported that in 2017 schools in the state could not accommodate some 1,400 qualified applicants for registered nurse training due to faculty-capacity issues. Simply put, there were not enough nurses teaching nursing in enough classrooms.
To have a shortage of nursing faculty at north Louisiana schools naturally results in a shortage of nurses. This dismal balance, however, is about to change.

The College of Arts, Education, and Sciences at the University of Louisiana Monroe is hosting the Spring 2019 Art Crawl at several campus locations on Thursday, February 28, from 5-7 p.m.

The exhibition in the CAES Dean's Conference Room will honor ULM's 50th anniversary as a university.

Admission is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided.

Kitty DeGree School of Nursing and School of Allied Health receive $26,000 grant from Living Well Foundation

The University of Louisiana Monroe's Kitty DeGree School of Nursing and the Counseling and Marriage & Family Therapy programs in the School of Allied Health in the College of Health Sciences, have been awarded a Living Well Foundation grant for the Mobile Bridge to Health for 2019. The grant is for $26,000.

The ULM Wind Ensemble will perform their first concert of the Spring semester on Tuesday evening, February 26, at 7:30 pm in Brown Theater on the ULM campus. There is no admission charge for this performance. Conductors of the Wind Ensemble are Derle R. Long and Steven Pederson.

The University of Louisiana Monroe Presidential Lyceum Series hosts what promises to be a fascinating Evening with Peter Zeihan on Thursday, March 14, 2019.

ULM, in partnership with President Nick J. Bruno and the Office of Student Life, annually sponsors the Lyceum Series which brings newsmakers, celebrities and forward-thinking cultural experts such as Zeihan to campus.

Zeihan is a geopolitical strategist, which means he helps people understand how the world works.

ULM Risk Management program ranked 9th in the country

ULM's Risk Management and Insurance Program moved up from the 11th largest in 2017 to the 9th largest in the nation in 2018.

Each year, Business Insurance, one of the top insurance industry news sources, ranks collegiate insurance programs by number of undergraduates majoring in risk management and insurance. For the fourth year in a row, the University of Louisiana Monroe's program was the largest in Louisiana and one of the largest in the Southeast, surpassing programs like University of Mississippi and Georgia State University.

"Nick and June Were Here" by ULM's Shalanda Stanley launches Feb. 12

Cosmo magazine named "Nick and June Were Here" the #3 Young Adult book to be "obsessed" with in 2019. This new novel by University of Louisiana Monroe faculty member Shalanda Stanley, Ph.D., will make its debut at a book launch from 6-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 12, in ballroom A of the SUB.
Stanley, a YA (Young Adult) author, is Interim Associate Director in the ULM School of Education.

ULM Mock Trial Team Wins Kangaroo Brawl

The University of Louisiana Monroe's mock trial team won Austin College's 2nd Annual Kangaroo Brawl in Sherman, TX on January 26-27, 2019, for their third tournament win of the season. ULM's Maroon squad defeated Texas A&M University, University of Arkansas, and Austin College to finish with a 7-0-1 record. Additionally, ULM's Gold squad finished in fifth place and three students won best attorney awards - Isiah Chavis, Jorden Johnson, and Shelby Joyner.

Progressive change in lighting will help ULM and the environment

The University of Louisiana Monroe has been awarded a grant which will further the university's dedication to being a good steward of the environment.

ULM received a $179,830 grant on Monday, Feb. 4, 2019, from Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell. The grant will fund installation of high-efficiency LED lights in some ULM buildings.

ULM offering new dual degree for PharmD and MBA

The University of Louisiana Monroe is now offering a dual degree program for a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Master of Business Administration.
Because of the growing need for pharmacy professionals to be knowledgeable in the business of operating a pharmacy, the ULM College of Pharmacy and the ULM College of Business and Social Sciences have developed a program for the professional pharmacy student to graduate with both a PharmD and MBA.
