MONROE, LA – The University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) will host a Suicide Prevention Month Wellness Walk on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The walk will begin at the Liew International Student Center at 3800 Northeast Dr. and conclude at The Grove, 4509 Bon Aire Dr., where students will have access to resource tables, vendors, and words of encouragement from guest speakers.
All students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to participate in this impactful event.
This collaborative effort, led by ULM’s Office of Global and Multicultural Affairs and the Self-Development, Counseling, & Special Accommodations Center, is designed to raise awareness about suicide prevention and to remind students that they are not alone.
“Students face many pressures in their daily lives, from academic expectations to financial and family responsibilities,” said Gina White, Director, Global and Multicultural Affairs. “It’s vital that they are aware of the resources available both on and off campus to support their well-being and success.”
The Wellness Walk is part of a national effort to highlight Suicide Prevention Month, which emphasizes reducing stigma, promoting mental health awareness, and connecting individuals to resources. Counseling professionals and community partners will be present to provide guidance and information about available support systems.
According to the Louisiana Department of Health, suicide is the 14th leading cause of death overall in Louisiana and the third leading cause of death for individuals ages 10 to 24 and 25 to 34. These sobering statistics highlight the importance of raising awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring that students and community members know where to find help.
“At the Self-Development, Counseling, & Special Accommodations Center, we strive to walk alongside students as they navigate challenges with mental health, stress, or personal obstacles. We want students to know they are not alone. Support, guidance, and resources are available to help them become the best version of themselves both inside and outside the classroom,” said Deandrea Carter, Counselor at the ULM Self-Development, Counseling, & Special Accommodations Center.
