Andre L. Lewis, a student in the online marriage and family therapy creative systemic studies Ph.D. program at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, was recently appointed Director and Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

Among his duties will be maintaining program accreditation, ensuring appropriate course offerings, as well as directing the faculty within the social work department. Along with these duties, Lewis will carry his own course load.

“To apply for this position and be appointed, it was certainly something that I was thrilled about, and I believe the Ph.D. at ULM has definitely helped me do that,” Lewis said. “For the first time, I felt like I was creating scholarship. I was going to be confident enough to produce work, because of the training with the faculty at eULM.”

The appointment follows over a decade of experience in academia, in practice as a clinical social worker for Delta Counseling Associates, and as the director of the Crossett Service Center in Crossett, Ark.

Before his time in the field, Lewis worked as an assistant professor of social work at Mississippi State University, where he began as an instructor before being hired to a tenure-track position, where he taught for five years.

Lewis notes that the unexpected benefits of the work in his online Ph.D. program were the structure and involvement of faculty members.

“Ph.D. programs are daunting tasks, period. They are overwhelming strictly by their design, but I never felt more supported in my life than at ULM. I always felt that there was a capable, helpful faculty member to help me,” said Lewis. “My previous work in academia and in my public practice gave me more context to understand the great things that were happening in the online program at ULM.”

Lewis also holds degrees from the University of Mississippi and the University of Southern Mississippi.
