ULM’s annual Chili Cook-Off heats up Nov. 9

Published November 7, 2013

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 9, chili aficionados will have the opportunity to show off their skills in the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s 29th annual Chili Cook-Off, held in The Grove tailgating area ahead of ULM’s football matchup against Arkansas State University.

The friendly competition—sponsored by ULM’s 31 Ambassadors and the ULM Alumni Association—provides participants with the opportunity to compare the family recipe to others in town.

ULM alumni, friends, families, businesses, and student groups will fill The Grove to test their spicy concoctions against one another. This year’s theme is “Chilin’ on the Bayou.”

ULM Lettermen Club (L-Club) President, Ronnie Dowling, has participated in past years with fellow L-Club members. He said the chili cook-off is an opportunity to visit with friends, but he leaves the chili preparation to an expert member.

He said, “Other members and I are there for testing and support; we just enjoy being together, although our designated cook puts together some quality chili!”

There are two competition divisions. Registration for student teams is $30 per team. Registration for all non-student teams is $40 per team.

Beverages will be provided and plaques will be awarded to those who place in each division.

Director of ULM Alumni Affairs, Devin Girod, reminds participants that “Showmanship is encouraged so prepare some clever apparel to fit the theme.”

Applications are available at the ULM Alumni Center, or can be accessed online at ulm.edu/alumni/chili.html
