Internationally renowned composer and conductor, Dr. David Childs, recently visited the University of Louisiana at Monroe for a concert and master class. Invited as the annual composer in residence, Childs is among the most celebrated musicians in chorale music, and one of many distinguished musicians who have graced the stages at ULM in recent years.

“This university has been very fortunate in regards to having accomplished musicians to mentor our students,” said Dr. Derle Long, director of ULM’s School of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA).

During his visit, Childs worked one-on-one with ULM music students during a special master class.

Music major Armand Wilson said, “Working with Dr. Childs is something that I will cherish forever. In our short time together, Dr. Childs gave me a totally new perspective on chorale music.”

Dr. Deborah Chandler, director of chorale activities believes that Childs’s visit to ULM is a testament to the caliber of education offered within VAPA’s Department of Music.

“This is indicative of our faculty’s dedication to providing exemplary learning opportunities to our students,” Chandler said.

Childs’s visit culminated with a ULM Concert Choir performance of Childs’s compositions.
