Five students inducted into National Political Science Honor Society

MONROE, LA - On Monday, April 15, 2024, at the University of Louisiana Monroe, the Alpha Zeta Nu Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, inducted five new members. Elenora Franco, Haleigh Lewellyan, Jessica DeFreese, Mallory LaBoeuf, and Melanna Morris were inducted during the ceremony.  

David Orr, City Manager of the City of Texarkana, Tex. gave the keynote address. He was also accompanied by the current City Management Fellow, Chiquita Burks. The city is offering several internships over the summer, including a city management internship, where the intern will complete economic impact surveys, Strong Towns cost analysis, and assist with projects and grant writing for the Texarkana Arts & Historic District Scale-Up Proposal.  

“Pi Sigma Alpha encourages the scientific and practical study of problems of government, to foster reforms in our governmental machinery, and to aid in the education of the electorate in problems of government,” said Dr. Daniel Hummel, Assistant Professor of Political Science and Pi Sigma Alpha faculty advisor.  

Selection into Pi Sigma Alpha is based upon three criteria: an overall GPA that places the student within the top one-third of their graduating class, a GPA of 3.5 or better in Political Science courses, and the completion of more than twelve hours of political science courses. Members receive a certificate of induction. 

Pi Sigma Alpha is a national political science honor society founded in 1919 at the University of Texas for the purpose of bringing together students and faculty interested in the study of government and politics. Pi Sigma Alpha is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), features over 700 chapters worldwide, and inducts 800 new members annually. Pi Sigma Alpha exists to stimulate scholarship and intellectual interest in political science.
