Masters
of Arts in Gerontology
The
degree consist of a 39-hour program. Graduate Assistantships
are available to qualified students. Those students entering
the program will be required to complete a core curriculum
and then may choose one of three areas of specialization
- Long
Term Care Administration - Focuses on preparation for
licensure as a nursing home administrator or management
of an assisted living facility.
- Program
Administrator - Focuses on understanding social service
needs of the elderly and administrative positions in social
service agencies.
- Aging
Studies - Focuses on preparing students for advanced
degrees with attention to research and policy issues.
Internships
Students
without prior work experience in the field of aging are required
to complete a one-semester internship. A placement depends
upon the student's area of specialization and specific career
interest. Students in the Long Term Care concentration must
complete an extended internship and meet special requirements
in order to prepare for the Nursing Home Administrator's License.
Assistantships
A limited
number of non-teaching and research assistantships as well
as graduate work study positions are offered as part of the
Certificate and Masters programs to qualified students. The
value of assistantships vary per academic semester and most
carry a tuition waiver.
