What is the difference between scholarly and popular?
You can read a short guide about that by clicking this link.

How do I cite and/or quote materials?
There are several different ways to properly cite resources. It depends on the type of source being cited, the information available for the source, and, most importantly, the style guide by which you must abide.

The most common style guides are the Modern Language Association Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing (MLA), the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), and the Chicago Manual of Style.  Purdue University's The Owl at Purdue is extremely helpful and provides examples and guidelines for many styles.  The official authority on the styles are still the print manuals: Copies of these manuals are available in the library:

The most recent ones are either on reserve or in reference.  Older copies are available in Reference and Stacks, under the same call number.
•    MLA: MLA handbook for writers of research papers, LB2369. G53 -- On reserve at Circulation Counter
•    APA: Publication manual of the American Psychological Association, BF76.7 .P46 -- On reserve at Circulation Counter
•    Chicago: A Manual of Style, Z253. C5 -- Ready-Reference, 1st Floor

How do I use Netlibary?
In order to be able to access electronic books in the NetLibrary collection you will need to set up an account through NetLibrary. You must do this on campus. To set up an account:

  1. Visit NetLibrary while on campus
  2. In the upper right-hand corner you will find a link for "Create a free account." Click on it. A form will appear that you will need to complete.
  3. Fill in the requested information. You create your username and password. They can be anything you want. Make sure your username and password are both at least 6 characters (letters and/or numbers) long
  4. Fill in your name and email address (you need an email address in order to use NetLibrary)
  5. Click on "Create Account"
  6. You have now set up your account!  You can use it off campus, too.
You can now search for electronic books one of two ways. You can search for books in the ULM Catalog:
Searching the catalog will search the NetLibrary collection as well as the regular print collection. E-books will have "URL" in the record. If you click on that URL, you will be directed to the e-book.
Or, you can can search NetLibrary itself, which will search only the NetLibrary collection.
You don't have to check out an e-book in order to use it. However, if you wish to check it out:
  1. Click on "eContent Details."
  2. One of your choices will be to "Checkout for 24 hours." Click on it.
  3. Now the book is checked out.

To check it back in, repeat the above process. This time, "Check In" will be the option, not "Checkout." Click on "Check In." You've checked the book in! If you fail to check the book in on your own, however, NetLibrary will automatically check the book back in, and you won't have access to the book unless you look it up again.
If someone else has checked out a book, you will not be able to access that book.

Is there a cost for the Interlibrary Loan Service?
Many libraries loan books free of charge. In addition, many libraries in Louisiana and other states do not charge for photocopying articles or other materials. When charges apply, you will be notified. The cost(s) may range from .10 per page and up, with a possible $1 or more handling fee, to as much as a flat fee of $10 or more per article regardless of the length of the article.

Can I use library resources from somewhere off-campus?
Library services are accessible from home via the library's web page. The library's web page address is http://www.ulm.edu/library. Anyone may search the catalog and Sanborn Maps, but the databases are only accessible to ULM students and employees because they are costly.  Not all databases are available off campus.
To access the databases from home, you will be required to enter your CWID (Campus-wide ID). The PIN is your birth date, MMYY (this cannot be changed), and YOUR SCHOOL is ULM.
Remember: your PIN cannot be changed.
