College of Pharmacy Standards for Professional Attire

The following Standards of Professional Attire will be in effect as of January 2006 and applies to all faculty and staff in The University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Pharmacy.

These standards should be followed during all hours in which the College is open to the public (generally 7:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 7:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday)

General Personal Care Standards:

  • Adequate precautions should be taken to maintain good personal hygiene. These precautions include regular bathing, use of deodorants and regular dental hygiene.
  • Hair maintenance: neat and clean, styled off the face and out of the eyes. Hair longer than shoulder length should be secured. Beards and mustaches should be clean and well groomed.
  • Other personal care considerations
    • Cologne, perfume or aftershave is not recommended in the patient care setting due to patient allergies and sensitivities.
    • Cosmetics should be used in moderation.
    • Nails should be well groomed, manicured and of short to medium length to facilitate patient care activities.
    • Jewelry and accessories should be non-distracting.
    • Tattoos must be covered by clothing.
    • Jewelry in pierced noses, lips, tongues and other exposed body areas, other than ears is not permitted.

Appropriate Attire Standards for College of Pharmacy

  • Attire: Clean, business casual styled clothing and shoes
    • Shirts with a tail or a split should be tucked in.
    • Belts should be worn with all pants that have belt loops.
    • An undershirt should be worn in undergarments are visible through clothing.
    • Skirts should be no shorter than one inch above the knee when sitting.
    • Sleeveless shirts only, not spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops, showing of mid-drift, or low cut tops.
    • Organization-Branded jerseys (not party/event T-shirts) can be worn on meeting days only.
    • Fleece jackets are acceptable dress when weather permits, not pullovers with a collar or sweatshirts
    • Dress Capri pants can be worn.
    • Dress sandals can be worn.
  • Items specifically not permitted under any condition:
    • Hats or caps (except headgear considered a part of religious or cultural dress).
    • Denim clothing or jeans of any color.
    • Shorts, cargo pants, culottes, skorts or mini-skirts.
    • Sweatpants, sweatshirts, non-collared T-shirts or T-shirts with lettering, or mid-drift tops (business casual styled turtlenecks and mock turtlenecks may be worn).
    • Athletic shoes, casual sandals and "flip-flops".
    • Absolutely no pajamas.

Exceptions:

  • After hours and weekend attire: Faculty should dress neatly at all times while in the Pharmacy building. Care should be taken not to wear clothing that might be deemed in appropriate for a professional.
  • Activities in specific laboratories and patient areas in which the instructors or institutional policy supersedes this policy.
  • Any medical conditions that inhibit adherence should be discussed with the Dean.

Enforcement Standards:

  • Standards of Attire are intended to be self-regulated. Please use your professional judgment in adhering to this dress code.
  • These Standards fall under the Code of Conduct for the College of Pharmacy.
