Practice Site: University Medical Center New Orleans
Dr. Andonie is a board-certified infectious diseases pharmacist (BCIDP) and certified
in HIV pharmacy (AAHIVP) serving as an assistant professor at the University of Louisiana
Monroe College of Pharmacy. Her practice site is at University Medical Center New
Orleans (UMCNO), a non-profit, academic hospital in downtown New Orleans. Her rotation
is a six-week learning experience on the Infectious Diseases Consult Service. She
works closely with Tulane Infectious Disease attending physicians and fellows, where
she ensures safe and effective medication use for all patients on the consult service.
Routine patient-care related responsibilities include discussing recommendations and
relevant literature with the infectious disease team, renal-dose adjustments, antimicrobial
stewardship, therapeutic drug monitoring, and effective communication of recommendations
with primary services and other healthcare professionals.
During this rotation, the learner will develop a greater understanding of clinical
microbiology and pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of antimicrobial therapy. As a
consult service, the learner will enhance his/her communication skills by discussing
recommendations with attending physicians, medical residents/interns, pharmacists,
and nursing staff. Aside from direct patient care, the rotation experience will also
include attending antimicrobial stewardship committee meetings, attending weekly microbiology
rounds and Tulane infectious disease conferences, drug information questions, a journal
club, a case presentation, and various topic discussions.
Practice Site: Emergency Department at University Medical Center New Orleans
My practice site is in the Emergency Department at University Medical Center New Orleans,
a Level I Trauma Academic Medical Center. The rotation seeks to provide students the
opportunity to care for patients in the fast-paced setting of the emergency department
solving the nuances associated with critical care pharmacotherapy. Students will learn
the role of an emergency medicine pharmacist in collaborating with health care teams
to optimize patient care. Students will work with physicians and nurses to make bedside
medication recommendations for patients presenting with a variety of medical emergencies.
My rotation covers core critical care concepts and may also include trauma and medical
resuscitation, medication therapy monitoring, medication histories and patient/provider
education. As a faculty member, it is rewarding for me to watch students connect the
dots between foundational classroom concepts and applying these concepts to fast-paced
patient care in the Emergency Department. I enjoy facilitating this application, having
students at the bedside and hands on in preparing medications for emergent administration.
The pharmacist faculty member, Dr. Alexis E. Horace, provides services in Primary
Medical Care, Gender Care, HIV Primary Care, and the newly formed Chronic Disease
Management team. For the Chronic Disease Management team, she is a stakeholder and
provides services for patients living with hypertension, asthma, and participants
in community health fairs, and diabetes groups. Dr. Horace also provides services
for the New Orleans Syringe Access program, where she provides education on the use
of naloxone for opioid overdose reversal. Student pharmacists are engaged in all these
activities as well as community outreach. They have opportunities to tailor the rotation
to fit their career goals while also gaining valuable practice experience. Dr. Horace
enjoys the positive impact that she has on her patients and in her community.
Practice Site: LSI Internal Medicine Clinic at University Medical Center New Orleans
Dr. Rotundo practices within the LSU Internal Medicine Clinic at University Medical
Center New Orleans, where she provides direct patient care alongside the LSU Internal
Medicine residents. Dr. Rotundo is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist,
and her clinical services include diabetes education and comprehensive medication
management. On rotation, students work with patients through one-on-one patient-pharmacist
appointments, which include discussing patients’ health goals and tailoring their
medicines to meet their needs. Students gain in-depth knowledge of diabetes management
and technologies including continuous glucose monitors. Dr. Rotundo’s favorite aspects
of working in clinic are building relationships with patients, individualizing care
to each person, and helping students provide high-quality care and grow in their role
as pharmacists.
