Current Projects

Communications System

The ULM Police Department is in the process of upgrading our communications system. Our current system has been in place for a number of years. Officers are experiencing a lot of noise generated from other agencies, which sometimes makes it impossible for them to communicate, and also causes officer safety problems. The new system will be operating at 800mhz, and will be put together by Monroe Communications, our local Motorola Dealer. This technology will enable ULMPD officers to communicate effectively with one another, therefore it will help to insure your safety as well as ours.

Student Officers

The ULMPD has a student officer program in place, and it is currently looking for eligible students to put into various positions. For more information, contact Capt. Robideaux at 342-5350, or 5350 if calling from on campus.

Bike Patrol

The ULMPD has four Trek Police Bikes among its fleet, and officers incorporate these bikes into their patrol procedures. Police bikes have proven to be very effective in combating offenses that a vehicle patrol unit would often over look or just not see. With the bikes, officers can maneuver in and out of parking lots, between buildings and other places where a car cannot go, with near stealth capability. This helps insure that your vehicle is safe, and that no one is around your dorm that should not be there.

K-9 Police Unit

Several UPD officers, along with the Chief are looking into the possibility of adding a K-9 to the ranks. The type of dog we are looking at would not be an attack or "bite" dog, but a dog of a gentle nature, like a Labrador. This new officer would be trained to sniff out numerous types of Controlled Dangerous Substances (CDS), and would also be utilized as a tracking dog to help find fleeing burglars or thieves. Although most of the CDS found is not in campus facilities, but rather on non-students passing through campus, the K-9 would greatly improve the odds of finding more of the CDS in the non-student vehicles, therefore preventing it from entering our facilities. The K-9 could also be used at University functions, not only as a deterrant, but as a public relations tool to show others that we are a Zero Tolerance School when it comes to drugs.
