Remarks from Larry Shappley, a ULM student-athlete and Criminal Justice major
Envision ULM 2007 Speech - November 15, 2007
First, I would like to thank ULM and ULM’s faculty for choosing me as the
student representative for the university. It is an honor to represent the school and to speak here tonight. I would like to spend a couple of minutes
talking about my experience thus far at ULM and how it has prepared me for
the future.
I came to ULM well-equipped thanks to my education at West
Monroe High School. However, the transition to college was difficult at
first. Coming to ULM, I had plans for the future, and like most plans, they
changed. After going through a rough first semester and a change of major, I
finally figured out my goal in life: a career in law after undergraduate
studies here at ULM.
The criminal justice program here has offered me
insight on some courses I might take in law school. I have enjoyed my
classes and my professors. I can truly say that the discipline and hard work
that the professors have demanded has laid the foundation for my future
success. I have learned through maturity and guidance from my professors
that hard work is the key to success.
Not only am I on athletic scholarship to play football, but I am also on an
academic scholarship. Being a student-athlete is not easy, but with the
understanding and support from the professors, the burden is lessened.
Anytime I needed additional help or support, or if I needed an extension on
a test due to a game, the professors were always willing to work with me and
my schedule. I have always appreciated the interest and support in the
football program, and it always made me proud to represent the school and
community when visiting other places.
Next, I want to talk about the changes
I have witnessed during my college career. Dr. Cofer and his faculty have
drastically changed the way the campus looks, and he has done a tremendous
job. They are the main reason that more students want to come to ULM.
Changes not only have taken place on the exterior, but changes have also taken
place inside the classroom. More computers and technology are an integrated
part of our education. The learning process is easier and more enjoyable.
In
closing, I want to thank ULM again for giving me the honor to discuss my
experience thus far. ULM is going in the right direction. I truly thank Dr.
Cofer and his administration for everything they’ve done and look forward to
seeing even more changes take place.
ULM is an exciting place to be and a
great place to receive an education. I know that the tools that I have
gained are invaluable, and that my education at ULM will prepare me to reach
my goals in the future.
