Award Winning Speech Debate Team Prepares For Nationals

The Speech and Debate Forum completed the 2003-2004 regular season with an astounding 97 awards won, including 18 championships, against some of the nations top speech and debate teams. The fall semester was one of the most successful in the history of ULM’s program, and saw the team earn 31 awards, including 5 championships. Team members Kymberleigh Bell, Tara Bouchie, Isaac Henderson, Nick Hirsch, Lashonda Williams and Amy Wilson all qualified for the National Forensics Association National Championship Tournament.

With the dawn of the spring semester, the ULM Speech and Debate Forum’s success grew even more.  As first year students matured into seasoned competitors, the team more than doubled the number of awards won during the fall semester.

The Forum began the spring semester with a third place finish at the Arkansas Tech University and Cameron University Speech and Debate Tournaments.  ULM earned 24 awards, besting in-state rivals LSU and Louisiana Tech University, as well as fifteen other universities from throughout the region.  The tournaments, hosted by Arkansas Tech University, were held in Russellville, Arkansas on January 16-18.

The team continued its success by capturing state titles in four events at the Louisiana Intercollegiate Forensics Association Championships.  The tournaments, hosted by Louisiana Tech University, were held in Ruston, Louisiana on February 6-8.  The team was led by Isaac Henderson who finished as state champion in Dramatic Interpretation and Program of Oral Interpretation.  Henderson also earned the state championship in the Pentathlon competition, which recognizes the top overall individual competitor in a combination of five events.  In debate competition, Amy Wilson garnered the top spot with a state championship in Public Debate.  In addition to the championships, the team had a strong showing, winning a total of twenty-five awards.

Following their successful performance at the state championships, the team continued its tune-up for the national championships with competitions at LSU, the University of Texas and San Antonio College which earned the team an additional 17 awards.

The Speech and Debate Forum is now preparing to represent ULM at both the American Forensics Association National Championship Tournament and the National Forensics Association National Championship Tournament, to be held April 2nd-5th at California State University-Long Beach and April 15th-18th at Western Illinois University.

The ULM Speech and Debate Forum is open to any undergraduate student, and no prior experience is required.  If you are interested in finding out more about the team, you are encouraged to contact Bob Alexander at 342-1462.
